But can you say, put more leather over the foam? Even paint it? Cover a baton with leather rather than duct tape? I sure can- and all thowse things will add to the cost. In the future I plan to experiment with herculiner (sp?) as a coating, but for now any other coverings would be special-order.

I make them to be snug on a 1 1/4 inch shaft, but I can do some work with a rasp to widen it out a bit.

In this particular case it's to cover the ugly-ass foam I have to glue to the striking surfaces. :x

SCA pollaxe for sale

I have one of my SCA legal pollaxes finished. It's made from stacked, glued, and sewn leather with foam on the striking surfaces. http://home.armourarchive.org/members/thorgrim/leatherwork%20pics/Pollaxe%203.jpg $45 shipped in the US or to an APO. As always, I take PayPal at m_kreitzer@yahoo.com Tha...

You might want to do some experimenting using a bit of the black dye mixed in some neatsfoot oil and applied working from the edges inward, so it will fade out -darkest at the outer edge, fading away as it comes in. And then hit the whole piece with a saddle tan. It can make the interior areas of a...

The idea is GREAT- I've been meaning to do the same thing for myself once I'm not ashamed of my tooling. I think that if you can manage to capture the medieval "feel" in modern office accessories you'll be minting money.

I think I've figured out the drawstring closure method depicted in this painting: http://home.armourarchive.org/members/thorgrim/leatherwork%20pics/girdle%20pouch%20painting%202.jpg I believe that the "knob" on the top of the flap and on top of the pouchlets is a button or bead attached to...

I think I know how the drawstrings in the second painting work- I built a mock-up and it functions very well. I'll post pics tomorrow after I get home from work- I gotta get to bed right now. :(

Here's a design I make out of layered leather and leather/foam. Once you get to this point you pad the striking surfaces and tape it up. They're dead easy to do.

I'm gonna have to break down and buy that book, I think, if I want to move into "reproduction" instead of "mostly-historical SCA" pieces (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that- I'll still make them).

Well, it looks nice, but the two images you posted have three external pouches that can be seen, aside from the large one. Any reason you did not go for the three? I didn't have enough room to put the third pouch on while keeping them a usable size. Later versions WILL have three, but this time i d...

Drawstring girdle pouch <UPDATE>

For something different, I decided to make a drawstring variant of the girdle pouch with attached pouchlets. It's made from deerskin (the loop and flap is 3-4 oz veg tanned) and handsewn with linen thread. The button is pewter, and the pouch measures 7" by 7" when open. Here are some pics:...

New girdle purse w/pouchlets !!!NOW AUCTION!!!

Here's another girdle purse with pouchlets. This pouch is hand sewn with linen thread and made from buttery soft chocolate deerskin. There are two main compartments, one in each flap, plus the two pouchlets. There is easily enough room to hold a wallet, keys, phone, smokes, etc. http://home.armourar...

I only use a drill on heavier pieces. I find that any little shreds are covered by the thread after I stitch. YMMV
For thinner stuff (3-4 oz or less) I use an awl.

All of my stitching is done by hand. I just use a marking wheel to lay out my stitches, and then I drill my holes with a drill press and a really friggin small bit. As for making the holes through all the layers at once, it really isn't needed. You just have to be careful when you lay it out, and ma...

Cat, I gotta tell ya- you need to stop selling yourself short. YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE A BRIEFCASE. You make pouches all the time- a briefcase is just an oversized, slightly different pouch. Look around at a few and you'll quickly see that you have the talent and skill to make one. Hell, your stuff is ...
