Re: Helm Fit / Injuries?
I have two "flight kit" helms. The great helm is 7.8 lbs and the kettle helm is 13.6 lbs. I put the great helm on my pell to armour it. The kettle helm flys with me if I have somewhere I can fight. I've never had an issue with either my kettle helm or armet. The armet fits very well, but not "snuggl...

Can you hit with both ends of the polearm, like pugil sticks? I tried on my pell and the rate of fire and power is amazing.
I'd be looking at a steel shod halberd and just throw haymakers like I was boxing.

I think the axe breaking was this year. The fellow was just pounding on another fellow who was fighting another fellow, and then the axe broke and the "expression" was priceless. Disgust and amusement.

Just looking at the video I can't get a clear answer. Those who were there, did you see polearms used effectively by anybody but Sir Gaston?

Re: The ability to Teach
The best teachers I've seen in the SCA are those who watch fighters for long periods of time, and then either (a) wait for somebody to walk up to them and ask for help or (b) walk up to the fighter during a BREAK and make ONE correction that is politely delivered and easily understood, then return t...

Hi, A friend has offered to make cased greaves in spring stainless for me. I just need to pay a small fee ( it's shockingly low, so I call this an "offer" rather than a sale ) but I need to go sprinting for 30 minutes and get my calves totally loaded with blood and as large as they can be and THEN m...

Hi,
I've been told by a reliable source that pollaxes are illegal in BON. But I know I saw one being used.
What is a legal polearm for BON?
With thanks,

I would like to suggest looking at the “Austrian Man-at-Arms, mid 14th century” from the “Carving of Guards at Christ’s Tomb, c. 1345, Muse’e de L’ Oeuvre Notre Dame, Strasbourg,; frescoes, Castle of Sabbionara, Avio.” It’s referenced on page 34 and plate C in “Italian Medieval Armies, 1300-1500, by...

Just bumping this up so I can follow it and enjoy. I wear armour and on a good day I can peen a mild rivet. I know that because yesterday I peened two mild rivetts, but royally messed up two stainless rivetts.
I'm enjoying the conversation on BotN armour and how to build it.
Thanks,

Excellent point Count Johnathan. I'm shocked that there aren't people camping on his doorstep dressed in suits of money for combat worthy welded stainless mail of the highest quality. I have a kettlehat with Master Knuut's welded stainless mail as a drape, and man does it feel and look right.

Battle of Nations Video Help
Hi,
I didn't bookmark it.
There was a video I saw where somebody was weilding an axe on someone's head, and the axe head broke off. And while the axeman has a full face on his helm, you can "read" the expression based on the body language.
If you find it, please post it.
With thanks,
-Aaron

Due to the lower physical and armour requirements, we have more people on the field.

We also have combat archery as well as spears. Thrusting is allowed, but done "safely" due to padding and rubber tips.

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?
IMO, those SCA fighters who went to BotN were the SCA's best and you were able to withstand intended-to-be-very-painful beatings with steel weapons. This is an excellent point about the durability of the fighers AND the armour IMO.

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?
Sir Guy, They had the intent to cause pain, and you guys either (a) didn't feel it or (b) didn't show it. You didn't leave the field due to pain or injury, even with the best attempts by some powerful opponents. This speaks to the durability of the armour and those who wear the armour. Younger (some...

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?
We've been having armour vs. weapons debates for well over a decade on this site. But to see the SCA's best go up against young Russians who are using steel weapons in 360 and full body targeting, with the intent to cause enough pain so that the SCA's best cannot continue...this changed the debate. ...

I wonder what a standard 9 ft SCA spear, with a pretty solid (but still rubberized) tip would do to the game. Not great in close quarters but the range game might be amusing.

Re: Is BotN just armoured wrestling?
There were knockouts in BotN, as well as some nasty bruises. And some had enough acute pain that they quit the fight but were fine later with minor chronic pain. The armour works and while we often go to one-shot in the SCA, historically it took a lot to stop an armoured fighter. When I was in the P...
