Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
Anyone remember what happened at Pennsic a few years ago? Tubular arrow, overly thick and squishy foam. Foam penetrated the eyeslot and struck the eye (of a friend of mine). What happened? Short term, I believe all arrows were pulled from the field until their diameter was increased. Long term, Ten...

Re: Complete beginner where to start
Start armouring with: 1. A mentor or at least somebody who can armour with you. 2. Books 3. Tools 4. Leather 5. Steel 6. Camera or video camera Your mentor and you can sit down and find a simple project to work on to start. I would suggest buying pre-made elbow cops from Rough from the Hammer and th...

Re: So who won Pennsic 43?
Any fighter who steps upon the field at Pennsic 43 won Pennsic 43 IMO. My one visit to Pennsic was epic in the fighting, sportsmanship and just general all around fun hitting people and attempting (poorly) not to get hit.

Dave has been my go-to for rough - needs work but the hard part is done - armour piees for almost 15 years. He has never failed me, and always suprised me with the astounding workmanship, customer service and speed of delivery.

So absolutely no comments (except mine) on Sir Scott's suggestion of 1.25 inch thrusting tips with just leather (therefore no give and no safety errors into helms)?

And also for the record, while at the event at the battle right near the scene of the incident, I heard that it had been pushed into the grill (as opposed to thrust into the grill) - though again, I cannot directly confirm that as an eyewitness or direct participant. Or just making your helmet with a more complete bargrill. Yes it would be beyond the SCA standards, but it would give you peace of mind I think. ;) For you, Mandrake tips seem to want to suck your face. Maybe we need to have lipstick on the next set of Mandrakes tips that are attempting to hit your ...

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
No dog in the fight, but perhaps the problem is the power with which some folks seem to be blasting at eyeslots? Why would anybody need to blast at eyeslots? The entire body is open now with those 2" tips. Spaces that were safe from 3" tips are vulnerable...and usually not armoured even!

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
I'll just hand them off to whoever I can give them to in the NCR. My time is done, so somebody could have the spears, pollaxes, etc... Just pick them up and I'm fine with that. Would it solve the issue to just go to a steel cap on the tip so it doesn't compress through the helm? That way recognition...

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
When I was fighting heavy, I had 2" Mandrake tips on all my two handed weapons. And no failures, good recognition of hits, easier to slip by a shield. And I think they tips are still in good shape even now after 7 years of using them. They have been sitting in the basement for over a year. I'll see ...

Re: CUSTOM BEAR CLAW SABATONS & GREAVES FROM ANSHELM ARMS!
Oh...that's sexy. I love the bigger toe look. I bet I'd get better traction with those. The tonlet armour of the Chamberlain of Burgandy (1500 AD) has sabatons like that and I think they'd get great traction and side-to-side movement over the pointed toe sabatons.

Some of the designs look a lot like things I've seen from history. Somebody is probably taking some lesson learned. I know of at least one Archiver who built his own greaves for Iraq work.

The one practice I went to was GREAT! I admit that I still dream of going to the ACL, but then I wake up to a cold splash of reality. I pray that the ACL finds people who have a better reality.

The madu will be replaced by the ma deuce. The ma deuce is somewhat European and almost old enough to be in the historical time period. Expect Vikings fighting at crown with florantine ma deuces.

I think most of the Archive was against madus on principle, and having "won" the battle they're avoiding coming on here and doing the in-your-face happy dance because it's not chivalrous or historical to brag on the internet about winning an argument over rules on accessories used in a costume fight...

Hi Jackie,
You are an artist. In part your mind is already gone, lost to your art. Just put a leash on that part of your mind that is lost, and let it wander but not too far.
You'll recover. I have faith in you.
And I've owned one of your helmets. It was insanely good.

Re: Anouther set of promises from Westcoast....
Protecting your fellow human beings from evil knights is the core of chivalry. Not giving up until the fight is won is another noble virtue. We will carry on because it is the chivalrous thing to do. To do otherwise would be curlish and self-serving. We do not do this because we are owed. Rather we ...
