The rule is fine for the hourglass style gaunts... 14th C. type; but for the later period armour it just seems wrong So does a face-grill for a spanglehelm...but we do it for safety. That said, this might be the start of slippery slope to fighting in those Sumo Wrestling suits they have a the count...

But steel hourglass gauntlets? I think the stick would have just hit the steel straight into my inner wrist. I fight in a full bell gauntlet protected 360 degrees, and sometimes, the gauntlet does dig into the base of my thumb. With some advice from a local Laural in armouring (and Knight), I adjus...

ahem........being one of the knights in the area (Japan) Aaron speaks of. Please accept my apologies -- it was meant to be in no way a slight against your honor or skill. I oversimplified. My viewpoint is that I tend to be a ham, and fight for the goofy fun of my lady and the crowd, and you tend to...

A Martial Art prides itself in style, form, perfection of self and looks. Katas in Karate and Jui-Jituzu qualify as Martial Art – they are for the viewing of the crowd. A Pas-de-Arms for SCA might qualify in this regard. A Martial Sport prides itself in success. Examples include Judo, Fencing...

Welcome to the joys of pole weapons! Sword and shield may be fun, but the first time out I snapped my wrists, and thought to my self, "No, never again." The pain, possiblity of permant injury, and the fact my sword and shield game stunk like last month's sushi made me give up on S&S. My gauntlets so...

So, who's the lucky lad M'Lady? Pad Padrig, In regards to our privacy I'd rather not post his name. It's no secret who I'm dating, yes he is the only one, and goodness knows I'm proud to be with such a great guy. But it just feels like it would be in poor taste to post his name to an international ...

LMAO .... thanks guys. I'm laughing & blushing all at once, now. Sorry to break the news, but I ripped my doorbell out of the wall after I started dating my guy. He's an Archiver too, so I hope y'all aren't making him too nervous. ( Hi sweety! ) Good! Now if he has any common sense he will marry yo...

Ouch... Both my wife and I fight. Our children are now three and seven years old. We had a hard time of it. All told, Maureen and I have fought in six events in seven years. Always, one of us was watching the kids and the other was fighting. I fought in the first two tournaments, then Maureen fought...

I really have nothing to add that hasn’t all ready been said. I like the idea, I can like it and stay quiet or I can like it and say so, I thing saying so will help more. "Me too"s serve a good purpose in this discussion. 3 good purposes, actually. 1) It let's us know when folks agree with t...

What is WMA?
Howdy,
What is WMA (other than White Mountain Armoury)?
Is it like the AMEMMA or HACHA?
Can you direct me to a web-site?
Who is local in Japan?

[SCA] Full body target -- would the Earl Marshall allow it
Howdy, Last night at fighter practice I heard the opinion that full-body targeting (including lower legs) would never be allowed in the SCA, regardless of the situation. Then I heard maybe, with some serious reservations. Avaloc suggested a "War Crown" and got R&Ded sometime later...are we traveling...

Dire, First off, I'm not offended I get asked about my prices all the time, so I will explain it here publicly. Making armour is what I do for a living, paying customers is what pays my rent, groceries, etc. This is not a hobby, it's my livelyhood. I charge $10.00/hr for labor, add in materials and...

Swimming is probably your best bet. work the upper body and let the legs "drag" especially until you talk to the Doc. It will work the upper body, cardio, back, arms but ...if you are careful, not put undue stress on the knee. Mav Yep, about one hour of continuous swimming per day should be good ex...

Dire, I thought the same thing about firms like Ice Falcon and others...so I started making armour myself.... After spending something like three weeks to make an articulated arm (probably 40 hours of work), I decided that ALL armourers UNDERCHARGE for armour, and I've bought from Ice Falcon often, ...

My comment was directly related to the part where you said that choosing a period look that hinders your fighting is "Cheating yourself in the game." Strongbow It depends on your game within the SCA. My armour is about 80 pounds of stainless, and I don't fight as fast as somebody with 30 pounds of ...

Re: Japanese armour lacing aid
Okay, we have a new product on the Sengoku Daimyo online shop -- a big ol' color poster showing the different styles of lacing of Japanese armour. If you make Japanese armour, you might want to put one up in your shop. And your bedroom. And living room. Hey, that blank space on the wall above your ...

Looks definately! Skill can come later, with time. Looking great AND fighting with skill is great, but when you don't look half-decent and you're fighting with skill...that means you've been in long enough to develop skill (1-2 years maybe), but still haven't considered looking great for those watch...
