We will have more then 4 fighters at the event. Sir Guy Everyone, I must credit Sir Guy with some massive editing on this with some nice additions for the "Speed Tourney" and editing down my excessive court time, etc... Thank you Sir Guy! My apologies for forgetting to credit you on the byline! -Aa...

I have some pictures, and I'm in Japan if you need me to do any on-the-spot research.

My wife is interested in that time as well.

Do you need some patterns?

I hope that didn't come across with the wrong tone... I"d love to find evidence for it, because it pulls the spectators in to the combat more, but just haven't seen any. I was hoping you might have. Nope, I don't have any literary evidence at all -- not a shred. I just wanted to bring in the ladies...

At the core of it, this event sounds like a perfectly fine idea. However, Cet is right. If you break for lunch and if the fighters eat a lot, some one will get sick (probably me!). Also, I like the idea of crests. Aaron, where are you? Mord. Just south of Tokyo right now. We've got a very small gro...

I've heard there's some relative success in using stains, but I'd think that with both paint and tape you'd have the same problem. Slide your gauntlet up and down the have a few dozen times and you'll need to redo it. I can verify that one. I stained my glaive with a nice varnish, three coats... .....

Has anyone done a "Counted Blows" Grand Melee?

Howdy,

Has anyone done a "Counted Blows" Grand Melee?

We're going to try one for Valantine's Day, but here in Japan our group is pretty open minded and eclectic.

Just curious.

Howdy,

I've got a new fighter here in Japan who is interested in Rough From the Hammer five piece knees and elbows, and possibly a plackard.

Can you e-mail me please?

I was looking for a nice way to have four hours of fighting for all the fighters, and a neat way for the ladies to participate. There won't be "rounds". It's just two hours (twice) of fighting, with a short break for water after you get hit ten times, etc... I don't want to make it too involved, bec...

I've used video to evaluate my fighting, and it's been helpful and embarassing.

I found out I really do "hesitate" when I swing, and right before the clinch I sort-of freeze up. In the clinch, I don't hit hard enough.

Now I'm working on that, and videotaping more.

Fought this weekend.

This morning I did five minutes of half-swording, at combat speed.

I was surprised how tired I can get swinging full out, and how much my hips DON'T swing when they should.

I'm working up to a half-hour at full speed every day.

I still hit too light, and use mostly my arms and not my hips... ...but I had range when I wanted it. ...I had close-quarters striking when I wanted it. ...I could choke up on the sword until it was almost a dagger, or lenghten out to make it a staff effectively. ...When one should...

Half-swording: What is your striking surfaces, etc…

Howdy,

After the long discussion (thank you!) on glaives and polearms, I got to thinking about half-swording.

If I substitute the two-handed sword, fought half-sword, for my polearm:

I read that Aaron likes to get "grill to grill" or belly to belly close. I almost can't help getting close like that. It's like salmon swimming upstream. The "Lay On" is called, and I rush in, block the first shot (half the time more or less…) and end up grill to grill and have to push agains...

I think that answered most of my questions. The neck should be avoided just like the groin -- a target that could remove your partner from the field in a bad way, and reduce your fun by one more valient fighter. And, our neck protection is for a last resort, not for hitting regularly like legs, helm...

Aaron -- attack their sword arm. Push it back, push it down, cut it when it leaps out for that wrap which is supposed to be so easy -- just make sure you have control of the sword arm, and don't let go of it until you know that you are letting go to strike a winning blow.
