What is the little "wind-up" wheel behind a close helm for?
I've got a beginner's question. What is the little "wind-up" wheel behind a close helm for? You know, the little wheel behind the english close helm shown here by that truly wonderful person, Craig Nadler: http://www.eskimo.com/~cwn/close.html The second set of pictures don't show it, so it must not...

Shipping to Korea for the military is the same rate as domestic.... My e-mail is miaullis@yahoo.com if you would like to e-mail me. Frankly, I would go with accdntprone. Most everything I know about helms I learned from him, and his prices are quite good. In response to a question, accdntprone actua...

As Accidntprone mentioned, I'm a short distance away from a Harbor Freight store. The problem is that the Harbor Freight on-line business, and the physical store business are two seperate entities. I'll call the shop up and see if they have the blades. If not, they can order them and I could ship th...

Ok, I've priced firbrick at $0.95 per brick, and then $25 for firemortar. I've got a steelyard behding me with THICK (1-2 inches thick) scrap steel they are willing to give me....could I build a forge out of thick steel, and then line the outside with brick? This would be a cost-cutting measure. -Aa...

If they try to break the spear, keep pushing forward...when it breaks into splinters, it will shove right through their plastic or bargrill...and after they are medically taken care of, you will find that a new rule about grabbing spears will be in place. Trust me, there are enough splinters in them...

I'm in Tacoma, WA. Prices may be better here. It may sound silly...but try your phonebook under "steel". Really! That's what I did to find my sources of steel. Of course, I live near a shipyard and two foundries...so the competition keeps steel prices lower I guess. But, check your phonebook under s...

Thank you Bob! You're always reliable for good information. Now, do you have an arming coat? I've seen your armour (it's really, really, really nice!) and I would like to ask what you are wearing underneath your steel, and what is it made of. I'm terribly confused on the arming coat problem, and I w...

How was an arming coat made (1500 AD)?
After reading Charles Ffoulkes book, I'm still rather lost.

Steel is now cheaper than plastic!
The price of steel in WAY down. The upside of this is that sport fighters now have no "I'm poor" excuse. If you wear plastic (other than a cup or breast protection), you ARE a sports fighter. From Calsak Plastic (1-888-637-0157): 4x8 sheet, 18 ga, HDD plastic: $48 Local source: 55-gallon plastic dru...

If red brick can't be fire-brick, why do we have red brick fire places? I'm not talking about heating up the steel until it's red hot...mearly up to a temperture where the carbon migrates into the steel. How would you make a forge out of brick?
Howdy,
I've got nearly an unlimited supply of brick (but not enough to make a house...)...how do I make a forge?
Thanks,
Aaron
