Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

Crucial moment now.

Where to put the hinges? The while line marks where my eyes sit.

Re: Helmet Formed by Squashing Technique Video

I squashed a breastplate, a globose one. The metal doesn't thin out that much, as you are just redistributing the metal around. Basically with a round hammer you make little "craters" on the inner surface when you hit, and the borders of these "craters" are thicker than the center. When you then ham...

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

The helmet is for myself, not a customer. The persona that would be using it would be a man-at-arms, so someone wealthy enough to afford a complete armour.

So I guess I'll just file them out =).

Question about patina and finish.

Should I keep it like this (top)? Should I file off the black spots more?

Yep, got mine.

Pretty effing cool.

Weirdest package ever (it comes in a green plastic sack), but well worth the wait and the money.

1000 thumbs up for Toby!

Excited =)!

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

Yes, after punching every hole has to be cleaned with a chisel and file.

But I hope after finishing the project I'll make myself a decent set of punching and chiseling tools.

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

I perhaps made the lining ones a tad too big, but it's gonna work anyways. I was kinda in a hurry for finishing the punching action, so I was using the same punch for both kind of holes. And actually, in the original lining holes and vervelles holes are kinda of the same size. When I'll be done with...

I realized I could have cut more at the sides, but oh well, next time. All has been hand filed, punched and chiseled. Perhaps a smaller version of a bascinet?

Like, a bascinet is quite well formed and tall, while a palet is a skull cap with vervelles and a pivoting visor?

Re: Early barbute, keyhole visors, aventails and face protec

Perhaps my wording wasn't clear or I just didn't write it :P. My point is that, as I understand it, people say or assume that visors are a nuisance while fighting on foot in battles, so you hear basically everywhere "I think that were closed on horse and raised or ditched when on foot". I don't refu...

Re: Early barbute, keyhole visors, aventails and face protec

Oh damn, I forgot to mention a very important point, my bad. Personal preference. I guess different fighters would have different set ups. Like you see in some German effigies knights with only mail on their arms and other with plate covering them completely cap a pie. Some would have preferred to f...

Re: Early barbute, keyhole visors, aventails and face protec

Regarding the use of visor, I refuse to believe that is wasn't used in the thick of battle. Why on earth would you leave your face exposed when arrows are flying and dozens of people are trying to stab you with spears and such? I think that while fighting on the frontline the visor was down, and per...

Ok, so this pushes the dating for separate maille sleeves at 1302. Nice.

Then I can just remove a layer of padding and try it. It's old woolen cloth. Now it's two layer of them, and the shells are held up together with pins =).

Very snug. It's not too tight, but it sits very firmly on my head. I don't think there is any "air" on the forehead, but surely is on the sides.

Re: How should a bascinet fit?

Well, make a copy would be very cool, since this is like the sixth attempt at it. The helm is 3mm overall, so I could draw the cheeks a little bit further down, yes. I'll wait until I have the actual liner to see how it fits again, and then I'll decide what to do. The main feature I wanted to reprod...

Re: How should a bascinet fit?

Better? i guess I could remove still a little bit more from the cheeks and the brow and tild the helm a little bit forward. This time I used more "padding" (roll of paper used in the workshop to wipe your hands) on the back and on the front, so I guess that changes something as well. Sorry for the c...

Re: Armour details from fresco - The church of St. Mary in P

Unfortunately it cites the Resurrection, but it doesn't say when it was painted.

It does say that there was a restoriation in 1429 though. But some are from 1410, others are later.

The description is rather confusing, actually =).

How should a bascinet fit?

Hello people. I finally managed to successfully make a decent bascinet. Now I'm wondering how it should fit. My main concern is how wide the face opening should be. The original has a pretty wide one, while mine seems to be about right, covering my cheeks and everything. I was wondering how much spa...
