Re: Experimental helmet forging
well, actually my third attempt is taking way less time. Now I'm at the 20th hour and it definitely looks more advanced than the previous attempt at the same hour count. This is 20 hour mark on the second attempt http://i.imgur.com/q6d1DM8.jpg This is 20 hour mark on the third attempt (note that on ...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
The time will grow shorter, don't worry. My last two attempts took both 45-50 hours, and the second one went way further that the first one. The more times you do the same process, the better you become at it. You learn to correct your mistakes, you learn to incorporate more steps into a single one....

Re: Precision in craftsmanship
I would just say: look at the originals. As many as you can. You will start to see little imperfections, asymmetries, file marks, dents and other "errors" that will change your perception on how much "good enough" was for them. Now with power tools, modern scales and super-precise handtools we tend ...

Re: Information on Italian Great Bascinet
I don't remember. I had this conversation years on facebook with a guy that had more pictures of it. And I think it was in a museum, not in a private collection. I didn't know it was from Calchis. And also, what's the deal with these great bascinets? Are they infantry helmets? Do we have any artisti...

Information on Italian Great Bascinet
Hello.
I'm looking for some more information and pictures of this great bascinet

I swear it's somewhere in Ιtaly and the plaque was reading that there are traces of paint on it.

Bohurt, Bagordi, Melee Tournaments et similia
Good day everyone. Lately with this whole BotN/IMCF hype I've been wandering how actual melee tournaments might have looked like in reality. I've been reading here and there that there were similar things in the past, with blunt weapons and rules. But does somebody have any quote or reference? I'm l...

You can upload it on your page. On the bottom right corner there is an "upload image". It's right above the button with the question mark.
The caveat is that you can only upload one image at the time.

Well, I don't know what can go wrong =).
In the search bar just type ref_arm_"number" and stuff should come up. I don't know why, but when you select the "my pins" button for the field where to search, stuff doesn't show up, even if you actually pinned those pins on your page.

Go to Pinterest. There you can just type the ref_arm_ and there you go.
Or go to the ref_arm_ folder into Goll's thesis and type the ref_arm_ you want =).

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring
Well, the starting original was this http://i.imgur.com/pFuejJj.jpg But I failed miserably. The starting plate was of the wrong shape and it made the bascinet be too short. I was planning on having a flat visor anyways, but the fact that it's 3-4 cm too short is a real bummer. Still, a good opportun...

I wouldn't use those as examples. Number 1 and 2 are clearly showing a lifted visor, while number 3 represents roman armour.

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring
Update time. So, I've got as far as the other attempt, but with far more less cracks. I finally found out how they get created and decided just to file them down before they become too dangerous. It takes a little bit extra time, but it surely works. http://i.imgur.com/3l8STze.jpg http://i.imgur.com...

He says that that's the ear-to-ear distance. So I (hopefully) assume it's at the height of the ears, and not at the very bottom.

Re: Question about the Lyle Bascinet authenticity.
I highly doubt that, Signo.
Bascinets were very tightly fitting.
The average ear to ear size is 18 cm. There is no space for another helmet.

So here we are talking about bascinets that have both lining holes and a leather strap to further sew the padded liner running on the inside, like a sallet?
That would be new.

Question about the Lyle Bascinet authenticity.
Hi folks. I was having a discussion with a guy on our group on facebook, and the Lyle bascinet came out. We were questioning the leather tabs that are bold by the vervelles. My thesis is that that's one of those victorian fashions, where they would rived the vervelle holes and apply a leather stripe...

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item
Having doubts on this bascinet. I have three objections: - the shape is "too rounded" and in front is not sloping downwards enough - the vervelles are super thin, like other fake examples - the is that hole for a vervelle in the middle of the brow, which doesn't make sense http://i.imgur.com/pA8dSVM...

Yea. Now I'm trying to work the metal only when it's red, not when it's "cold".
I'm trying to be more careful, so I'll just see if the cracks will appear again.
Thanks for the support, mate!
