Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

I'm not using coke, and the steel is normal mild steel. In the next attempt I'm gonna be more careful and from time to time forge the surface to relieve the stress.

Nah this is not for selling. I'm just gonna keep doing them until I get one right =).

And besides, it's too small, even from my tiny head.

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

I was too hard on the material. A guy from school advised me to forge it from time to time, as these cracks are the result of the meterial stressing out and giving up. So basically every now and then I should "hot planish" the surface to keep the material together and prevent the microfractures from...

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

More progress today as well. A crack formed on the nape area and had to cut it away. And that sucks. A lot more are forming on the surface, and some are quite deep. I didn't expect 3mm mild steel to give up so easily. http://i.imgur.com/JjkR5ko.jpg http://i.imgur.com/tDpJpiN.jpg http://i.imgur.com/q...

Re: The Physics of Protection Question

Modern reproduction are too heavy and... t0o big. Still talking about bascinets, the average distance from ear to ear is 7 inches. Some are bigger, some are smaller. And the liner on extant helmets are not that thick at all, they are there fro comfort of wearing, rather than stopping the blows. http...

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

Of course I wouldn't cut it off to the final shape, I'd leave couple of centimeters from the actual edge. I was just wandering if cutting the face opening now would affect the raising of the rest of the helm an how the material moves.

Re: The start of a Journey: professional armouring

Ow, yeah, that. Don't worry, that's just a mark to make understand that that' a bascinet. Fortunately enough the printed images I have on the wall are actually 1:1 scale, so I'll just use them as reference. I fear though that my version is a little bit too small. Tomorrow we'll see =). I was just curious, that's it =).

I didn't want to prove at all the existence of solid breastplate worn over maille by 1350.

I was skeptical myself. Thanks for the clarification.

Awesome. Thanks. Because for me it looked like the rivets and the metal strip were all riveted to the gauntlet, and not independent from it. Now it's much clearer.

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item

This gauntlet strikes me as strange. On the outside it seems not to have holes for attaching the fingers, yet on the inside shot there is a metal strip attached via rivets, even though they are aligned quite in a weird way. Any thought? ref_arm_1305 http://i.imgur.com/qjg41tz.jpg http://i.imgur.com/...

There are horizontal lines in the middle of the thing, so I would say hinge.

And just look at how much detail there is there!!! The artist took time to put highlights on the rivet heads of the mail!
