Vitus, you did leave out the possibility, however slight you feel it is, that some may just be to ashamed to admit it just yet. It is a possibility. But duplicity? I just don't see how I could possibly be deceiving anyone. This thread is about looking at an aspect of SCA culture that I FIND DUPLICIT...

won't happen.

There are too many helms out there already that nobody will want to convert.

And you can't grandfather a safety issue.

I'm not saying I don't like the idea. I'd be fine with it. But it won't happen.

True, but it could be argued that cheating on purpose is the same as lying. Lying falls under "bearing false witness". Therefore, cheating is sinful. But, I'm not a religious scholar, and this thread really seems to be about admitting when you have done wrong instead of debating semantics.

So all of the guys in period were 250 lb body builders? We know that is not true that most were smaller more conditioned maybe but smaller over all, and armor did get defeated so it would follow that you do not have to be a 250 lb monster to defeat armor. Huh? Was that directed at my post? I was re...

I much prefer vertical bars.

I can see "through" them, in a way. I don't even notice they are there.

Horizontal bars always seem to distract me. At least one bar is always clearly visible and in the way.

Even if you had standard issue swords, with standard issue maille, reproduced with medieval tech using a system were every weapon and every piece of armour were of identical quality the force needed would still vary. The armour standard can be useful. I once had a guy throwing butt wraps on me like they were going out of style. Grant you, he got past my (active) defenses, but the shots weren't landing with any force. I wear a maille byrnie and the shots were coming in at an angle where the rattan had to actually...

I have a sin that weighs heavy on my mind. Six things the Lord hateth, and the seventh His soul detesteth, namely: A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren. All weapons require training. Swords earned their romantic reputation by being expensive, not by being more difficult to use or more effective on the field.

The Ashcraft Baker site does in fact list this as Sutton Hu. Which most will interpret as a misspelled Sutton Hoo. I think pattern welded steel is supposed to be made from two different types of steel to make the pattern.

If the maille is all one type, you may not see a pattern at all once the pieces have been sufficiently forge welded together.

Picking nits

The throat protection thread got me wondering. I'm sure the VAST majority of marshals inspecting our gear are straight up, reasonable, honest people volunteering their time so the rest of us can fight. My hat (helmet) goes off to you all. But, have you ever seen or heard about marshals who give more...

As I've mentioned before, I once had a marshal threaten to fail my helmet at Pennsic because a thrusting tip could get in if I were laying dead on the field and the thrust slid up my breastplate and hit my chin.

The weapon would have needed to been almost parallel to my sternum.
