Re: Rule Changes
So, question. With the change to armor requirements, "All authorized combatants and warranted Marshals shall disguise, cover, or remove modern corporate logos and sport gear unless necessary for medical reasons." Does this mean that modern shoes are out. This extremely restricts many folk...

So now madus have to be over 48" and are therefore considered two handed weapons? I'm not tryin to be a stinker it's just that it really doesn't make sense why my weapon that never caused any issues for anyone is suddenly illegal after nearly two decades of use. With all due respect, I'm sure ...

Re: Rule Changes
I was told (pure gossip) that it was because too many people were getting a basket hilt or a gauntlet to the face when people tried to use a buttspike on their sword or mace. Then people began arguing about what was considered "one-handed" vs "two-handed". So the rule was written...

I'm very happy to have this rule change. I'm just wondering how long until somebody throws a piece of grey duct tape over the swoosh on their white nikes and calls it good.

I read it as a joke.
The helmet in the second picture reminds me of the helmets in the opening scene of Lord of the Rings.
What movie did you make them for?

Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"
What I can't figure out is why some people put so much work into blatantly non period armour. I met a guy once who made a lammellar out of blue plastic and laced it with weed eater cord. WHY? That is a lot of effort to cut plates, drill them, sand them, lace them etc when simply using the plastic to...

Sorry Rhys, but I would much prefer to see plain black egg gaunts than what you have there.
It boils down to taste, but for me the plain black fades away and those jump out at me.

You can find rattan that has a natural bend in it. Though I doubt most merchants would bother bringing something that bent to an event for sale. Your best bet might be to use steam or hot water.

I like those gauntlets, but I can't wear them. My thumb seems to be in a different spot from his pattern. About 3/4 of an inch off.

Gorm, I understand that tone is difficult to convey in a typed medium. I do hope your answer was not intended to be as flippant as it seemed when I read it. Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?
I'm curious why there can't be a ban on visible plastic. As far as enforcing it that seems easy enough. If you show up on the field with any you are asked to replace it or remove yourself from the field. Because poorly made plastic barrel armour with a bedsheet glued onto it doesn't look like armou...

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?
I'm wondering how much people are getting caught up on wording. Perhaps we should be discussing defining the bar rather than raising it. It is very difficult to enforce a standard that is so undefined. SCA has a low bar. I'm fine with that. But I do wish there was some way to define that bar so that...

That would be interesting. But how would the ability to weld allow you do to that? as opposed to forming and riveting it all cold? I changed the bar grill. Remodeling is fiddly and a bit slow compared with building new. I'm not a proffessional. This is not my livelyhood. Shop hours are not a real c...

Probably the same marshal from pennsic long ago who informed me that a shot could hit my chin if I were laying on my back and the thrust came up my belly and chest.

The vervelles are cotter pins. They were added by my friend when he decided to hang an aventail from the helmet. He quickly decided it was too heavy and put a leather drape on instead. I removed the leather because it was moldy and I had to access the rest of the helmet to clean the rust off.

Is there really something wrong with the concept of "Hey, the Org sets a minimum standard that is deliberately crazy low, because we wanna get people in the tent...if you want to raise the bar for yourself and those around you, you're welcome to set it as high as you want, and if you get to th...

Re: Odd helmet, what can I do with it?
Nothing "needs" to be done. No repairs need to be made. The helmet is a tank, the top is made out of 10 gauge mild steel. I dunno about the sides, looks like 14 gauge to me. I'll probably use it with my 15th century kit as a "sallet-ish" kettle helm until I can get a more accurat...

Odd helmet, what can I do with it?
A friend of mine gave me his old helmet. Its kind of odd, it looks like someone made a miniature "black sallet" with no visor and mounted it on top of an SCA helm. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee11/fryeguy_2007/oddhelmet.jpg my guess is that it is supposed to be an "archer's sal...

For the record, "throw a tabard over it" is not a means of concealing plastic body armour from view.

Snipped for brevity yeah...if there was a no plastic rule .. new folks would be out in the cold....College students wouldn't be able to afford Armor...? I'm sorry, but this is not true. My first college suit didn't cost hardly anything at all and it had no plastic in it at all (except the cup). In f...
