The monetary value of a prize is irrelevant in the extreme.

I would still participate if there were no prize at all.

Congratulations again on your win Hauoc.

This has become my favorite Pennsic tourney. I love seeing all of the really great harnesses out there.

Thank you all.

I'm curious as well.

What was considered chivalrous and fair to our ancestors, in movies, and to us are three different things.

A friend of mine got some grief over wearing a belt like that. It was counter-changed black and white ermine spots. He actually tried to use more of a light beige, but caught flack for it nonetheless. Grant you, my friend does like to "rock the boat" a bit, and I wouldn't put it past him t...

I know that helm is for tilting, but if I saw that helm charging at me in a melee with a greatsword or something I think I'd crap myself.

It looks mean!

Nice job.

Re: WMA in SCA classes: Reviews + what do you want to see?

I took the Fiore classes, and went back to take the "in harness" again with armour the second time.

Unfortunately, many of the classes I was interested in got cancelled this year. Sad, because I wasn't able to fight much either.

I had a blast. Though next year I have to remember to have my own armour to wear under the maille. I had a rough time lifting my arms because of the binding.

Named weapons (SCA)

Do any of you name your rattan weapons? If so, given the semi-disposable nature of rattan does the name still apply when you put the furniture on a new stick? I have a bastard sword I named Beastly , an axe that ended up with the name Beater , and a longseax that was cristened Uruk-Hai by a friend.

I started with a three inch diameter piece of rattan that had a nice curve in the end. I removed all of the rattan that was not glaive shaped. Then I added tape.

Re: "Rude" Salutes

When I fight with a great-sword I will typically turn the weapon upside down, grip it by the blade and hold it in front of my face when I salute, forming a cross. While holding it this way I will also bow, but keeping the cross held vertically. Once, I had my opponent say "hold" just befor...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

I think we can continue to remain "big tent" (greeks, romans, vikings, knights, samuria, heck even genericelts) and still move towards more accuracy on an individual level. However, that means the SCA is going to have to do two things that seem to give shivers up and down its collective sp...

Re: Treadmill shows medieval armour influenced battles

If it is the same show I saw they used a flat plate of metal vs a turn shoe. Which of course is completely invalid. A sabaton is no more a flat piece of metal than a shoe is a piece hide. Their metal plate did not articulate, had no holes for rivets, and was perfectly flat across the bottom. I can't...

In this day and age a steel knife that looks like it was knapped is probably a lot cheaper than buying a knapped one in the first place.

I suspect you are being too sensitive.

Some might want to intimidate you with the shield slap, but that isn't the same as being rude.

For most, I'm sure it is an earnest gesture and you should take it in the spirit in which it is given.

Agreed. Unless it is absolutely a killer deal (I once got a helm for $5) you should find a culture and time you are interested in and buy the helmet you want to fight in for quite some time. It might not be your final dream helmet, but you don't want to go replacing one after less than a year has go...

Absolutely. But I can think of only a few people who actually make axes that I think would be able to withstand that kind of thrust repeatedly.

Vitus's probably could.

I'm not sure about the architectural foam heads though.
