Re: Dane Axe

I went ahead and put both on mine. I plan to make another that is just plain axe.

The reason I put the spikes on mine is that in a real fight there would be many things I would be able to do with the axe that I cannot do in SCA combat. The spikes help me make up some of the difference.

It looks neat, but I don't think those things would hold up in combat very well. I have a bunch in my leather-working kit and I haven't found any real use for them.

Re: Not so hidden armor

I freely admit that each of those examples is subjective. Based on my own views and opinions. I have found that there is very little in the SCA that is objective in the first place. Different people will have different opinions on what "feels" medieval and what does not. My point is that p...

Re: Not so hidden armor

I think discussions like this tend to get bogged down in verbiage. With rules (combat oriented) that prohibit most SCA kits from being completely historically accurate we end up arguing over how "authentic" is "authentic". We argue over what the mission is and what the mission sh...

Re: Not so hidden armor

I don't know about anywhere else, but Atlantia's appearance rule can be achieved with less than $10. Two bedsheets (assuming you are a large man) from the thrift store. A roll of duct tape. Cut into big tunics and pants. Tape the inside seam. Done. Grant you, it won't look nice. But the rule doesn't...

That should be on a T-shirt.

Why wear steel?
Because chicks dig real armour!

You could do a whole line of them, each one with a period image of a steel clad warrior from a different era/culture.

Re: unpadded but light?

So, if I'm understanding things correctly...the "unpadded but light" ruling applies to the type of foam that the weapon's head is made from. The weapon's head is light, but not necessarily the entire weapon. And as long as it is made from the same foam as the By My Hand weapon heads are ma...

this may be one of the best pennsic pics I have seen.

There are some blatant mundanities, the wagon wheels, but you have to look for them.

The drum may be, but I don't know drums.

I don't think you are getting my question.

How light is light? 2lbs? 3lbs? What is the rule? How do I make one without being in violation of the rules.

Even if it passes, I refuse to take the padding off my big danish axe. I won't make anything I would not be willing to be hit with.

unpadded but light?

At Saphire Joust (Atlantia) I got a chance to fight with some two-handed weapons with heads. A double headed axe and a great mace. The heads seemed to be made of architectural foam but were not padded. I was told they fell under the new rule of "unpadded but light". No one could tell me wh...

Search fu is weak - byzantine source material

On page 41 of Osprey's Byzantine Infantryman , Warrior series, they have an illustration from a ceramic plate of a hero wielding a curved sword and a dagger (or two swords) to slay a beast. Though it says the image was from a ceramic plate, it also says the image was drawn by David Irwin. So it is s...

I cut that band off and dye the white edges of the fingers and cuffs. It doesn't stand out in pics.

I use the same glove, and it is visible on my right hand in this pic, but you have to look hard to see it.

Personally I've always liked the look of bearded axes.

I've cut portions off of your pictures to see what they would look like if I cut the top off myself, but the proportions are off.

Of course, you might be better served by conducting a survey or something.
