Almost all the blue Walmart foam I've seen has been less than 1/2 inch.

If you can get it thick enough, it is legal.

But the blue foam sucks.

Hard to say, it says the helm is made from 16 guage, but it may be thinner now. 16 gauge is the minimum, but that will still crumple around your head like tin foil and you will probably need a new helm within a year or so. Also, that type of helmet is supposed to be fitted. The odds of it fitting yo...

There are several good and inexpensive armourers here on this board. Before you and your friends sink a lot of money into it, have you tried SCA combat? The last thing you want is to buy the stuff and find that you don't want to fight after all. Your local group should have some loaner stuff you can...

How about aluminum. You can get some aluminum wire from the hardware store and make it a family project. Making it out of butted mail has the added bonus of being easy to expand as your kid gets older.

Most people carve their hilts down though. So, the 1.25 inch for spear or pole, but the steel sword should do well enough for others.

My suggestion would be to look up some various styles online and get an idea as to what you want. At least loosely. That is going to be a huge influence on the price. I'm not really familiar with those groups. Does it need to be "functional" as in protecting your body from being damaged, o...

It sucked to show up for what the book said was on time and find that I was an hour late.

I was told that there were a lot of errors like that last year.

I'm picking number 8. SCA minimums should be able to protect a person enough that calling an ambulance is not needed. The minimums leave a lot of the body uncovered. Broken bones can and do happen, I know a lot of people who have had them. Broken bones do usually require medical attention, but rarel...

The recent discussion on 2 inch spear tips got me wondering. It seems that different people have different expectations of what the minimum SCA armour is supposed to accomplish. Since I don’t know how to create a survey, I’ll do it this way. Keep in mind, this is for SCA minimums, not your perso...

Don't

As Sir Corby said, they can cut people, and I've never seen them survive very long as a shield edging.

Unless of course you like replacing things after ever practice and between tourney rounds.
