Aluminum 14th cent. spalders for sale.

I have a set of aluminum spalders for sale here. VERY light- 16 gauge aluminum. Not hardened, and I have no idea what the alloy is. Nice brass scallop buckles. Articulation is on leather strips. Two holes for pointing. They don't fit my new 15th century kit, and they were an experiment, so I won't b...

Re: Looking for arm protection

Sorry this took a bit- The arms are 3/16 inch tooling leather- so quite solid and sturdy. Mild steel rondel couters. The splints are thick, hardened aircraft aluminum. (6061, T6. Main plate 11 gauge, side plates 12 gauge.) Satin finished. (green scrubby pad-easily touched up.) I started to rivet the ...

Yeah, you and me both, bro.

I'm going through a very slow recuperation after months of illness.

Get better, and inspire me to recover properly.

Hm, I have a set of splinted arms with rondel elbows I'm thinking of selling.

Never used- just about finished making them, and decided to go 15th century instead.

I'll see if I can manage pics.

I actually use a bandsaw for thick leather myself.

Sometimes I'll knife cut- but only for smaller pieces in simple shapes.
Otherwise, its just too much work.

Teardrop hammer.

I should have specified- but the only ones I can find to buy locally are teardrops.

I use the broad end to dish splints, narrow end for truing.

I found the nylon hammer put fewer and smaller hammer dings in the metal, so less planishing was needed to finish up. -Badger- Thanks for the advice Badger. Two medieval utility/belt knives for sale- NOT auction

I have two of my popular antler hilted medieval sheath knives for sale. Since theres been requests for me to offer a few for sale without the hassle of an auction, I will do so for these two. First to arrange paypal gets them. Sheaths already made, leather dried and hard, so they are ready for immed...

Re: how to polish brass?

You can actually use a small mount of buffing compound and an old sock or a piece of wool cloth to get a not quite mirror finish on brass.
I've done it a few times, when my grinder was dead or packed away.

Takes forever, but for small things like a belt buckle, it does work.

Hm, more like dish the splint to fit. Theres no real standard for how much dish/curve to add...I'd say just go for what works for you, personally. I make splints by just pounding in a basic dish down the length of the splint with a nylon hammer and a two by four with a groove cut in it....Then corre...

For me, I appreciate the extra comments when I post something for sale. It makes the place feel friendlier. For me at least, thats at least as important as selling stuff. Aw, now thats a cutie. We had serious problems with kitten dumpers at my grandparent's place, because of a public access road that ended against the property. Much of the weight of the aventail will rest on your shoulders, not your neck.

Thats where the pound or two figure comes from.

I honestly never noticed the extra weight after a few minutes of putting my helm on.

Made this a few years back. I used a mild steel breastplate for the main forming, and a plastic shoulder dish from an incompleted clone trooper armor to form the shoulders. I found that plastic dishes, funnels and other shapes work just fine for cold to warm wet forming of leather- just wet the leat...

I've never had any hesitation using butted mail in something like an aventail. The drawback is that you have to repair it when it "moth-holes". The galvanized aventail I had on my old spun top, 22 years ago had to be repaired exactly once... And I fought in it weekly for practices. The butted mail I...

To be honest, Losthelm has the right of it. Stakes in a variety of shapes will serve you better for armoring than a single anvil. Most of what I do, I do with a pair of the cast iron dishing forms I got from Llewelyn Goddodin here on the archive, a section of rail scrap, and some lengths of thick wa...

Well, harbor freight has had chinese made import anvils for as low as $50. I have not seen one at a HF for some time, so they may be discontinued. For a purpose made anvil, prices vary a lot- but out here in California they are hard to find. I would not be surprised to see $200 or more, asking price...
