Re: Churborg 13 breastplate details?
Hm, so you mean the three frontal plates are riveted to one another in a solid piece? Or do they have some level of articulation together? (Sliding rivets? Loose or long shanked rivets?) Thats good information actually, Wade. I had not previously heard of this about the #13. I will NOT be adding a l...

Churborg 13 breastplate details?
I'm thinking of making a Churborg 13 style breastplate, and after looking at pics online I am wondering about a few details. Mostly this- The center plate...For anyone thats made or worn one, is it a straight sided plate, or tapered? It looks a lot like armorers have made versions both ways- Some wi...

Re: From DeviantArt: a Gamby(!)
Except for the longer sleeves, it looks almost exactly like the pattern I fabbed up for my first gambeson. I took the body of a civil war sack coat pattern and added a bit of shape to the sides. Made the sleeves elbow length, but did more or less the same open armpit design. The problem for mine, wa...

Yeah, silicon bronze.
Well, I did hope....
But I'm trying to find some tin bronze for a project.
I could always make my own, but smelting is prohibitively difficult in the garage here.

I notice immediately that no effort was made by the sculptor the detail the maille anywhere on the effigy. Therefor I vote that its a somewhat cheap job, done with just sufficient details to satisfy the customer or his family, and seams were largely skipped over. Yes, there are some rivets- but over...

Re: Did some of the wisby cop's have dished plates?
I would say the upper chest plates at least need some minor dishing, or they just won't conform to the curve of the upper torso. I remember issues with this years ago when making leather armor, and the problem only went away when I got more shape in the upper chest pieces. I will also mention that I...

I passed up a few for very cheap on Ebay because I wasn't sure that I could get dies for them.
Thanks for the info- I'll jump on the next one I spot.

I wonder if it would be worth my time to offer bandsaw cut tiller blanks for CA crossbows?
Shaped, but without finishing work to keep them cheap.
Making the basic tiller is the hardest part, and the three piece laminated design is fairly practical and easy to finish.

Re: WTB/ trade for Combat crossbow legal Atenveldt/Etrella
Yeah, CA is a mess across the board for regs. Every kingdom does it differently, and no two are alike. I can't imagine wanting to pack anything over 24 bolts on my body for a battle- even 24 sounds like a pain, since I never carried more than 7 arrows for Dagorhir archery. Gleaning, (Thanks for the ...

When you say "war belt", do you mean a kidney belt/body bracelet? I assume this is what you mean for SCA minimum armor standards, but thought I would ask you to specify. What you need it for, (SCA combat, living history, etc.) and where you are located are both important details to include here on t...

Cut and pasted from the Estrella regs PDF: Combat Archers shall be limited to 24 arrows/crossbow bolts per archer, per battle for all battles. I did not notice any specific regulations concerning picking up bolts or arrows that had been shot at you and using them yourself. That presumably is covered...

Re: WTB/ trade for Combat crossbow legal Atenveldt/Etrella
From the looks of things, felwalker bolts are allowed at Estrella, same as in Caid. Prods made of fiberglass rod or homemade fiberglass prods are expressly forbidden. And combat archers are limited to carrying 24 bolts or arrows on the field. Prods for crossbows are limited to 0-1000 inch pounds. Pl...

Re: Overlapping washers as armour. Anyone done this?
Excellent link- thank you. I tend to think of jacks as "catch-all" armor. Certainly, old brigs would be used for the purpose- but things like iron straps from barrel bands, chunks of old pots or pans, old cuisse plates, greaves or other less identifiable armor junk and scraps were just as likely. An...

Re: Overlapping washers as armour. Anyone done this?
I have wondered if fender washers could be used to make a jack...But most aren't thin enough. Most fender washers seem to be around 16-14 gauge in thickness, and since every plate in a jack has such huge overlap, its just too much weight. I'd think 20 to 22 gauge plates would work well- and you migh...

I'll try. the construction seems to be to first make lines of overlapped small plates. Draw one line of stitch from center hole to center hole to make a line of connected plates. Make several of these, and then lay the next line on top of or under the first. The center holes should be staggered from...

Re: Overlapping washers as armour. Anyone done this?
Russ, I am convinced the borderer's jack plates were sewn in to fasten them due to the scarcity of metal in the area and the general poverty overall. Rivets in sufficient quantity to make a jack would have cost a small fortune, wouldn't likely be more secure, and anyone living in the border territor...

Re: Overlapping washers as armour. Anyone done this?
I made several pieces of armor in the early 80s out of washers connected in various ways- mostly because my father worked for a fastener company and I wound up with something like 30 pounds of assorted washers that were returns he took in, and still had when he quit the company. I wound up with them...
