Re: WTS GDFB hounskull helm and Arm street legs

Hm, if the helm is the wrong size for Irish, I could offer hardened aircraft aluminum splints in trade. (I have a small head..) We'd need to work out what pattern and such, but I believe I have enough metal left for a trade deal. Could do other armor bits depending on what materials I have on hand, ...

Re: Sick of breaking the bank

Two layers of canvas covered by a third of nearly any outer material for looks has been the recommended treatment for cloth COP shells around here for as long as I've been on the archive, so hard to go wrong there. :) -Badger- Huh, I'll have to rethink that then. Re: Sick of breaking the bank

Hm, artificial leathers that I have played with are NOT durable. Its worth trying for an experiment- but as Konstantin said, they do not breathe at all. Its essentially plastic sheeting on a fabric backing, and it tends to tear easily. I've got several yards of rather good quality artificial leather...

Re: Sick of breaking the bank

For me, most scrap stainless at the place I go to isn't marked. But once again, as Konstantin said, so long as its thick enough and dished, the alloy is less important for armor applications. (Any stainless will be more bend and dent resistant that an equal thickness of mild steel, not so?) As for f...

I've been leaning towards a 3 inch size.

Mostly, I'd like to know folks thoughts on size- outside diameter and mount holes before I start.

Thanks.

Question on rattan rondel dagger hardware

I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep, and my mind wandered to thoughts of making things again. I had an unusual inspiration- stacked and riveted aluminum and brass rondel dagger guards and pommels. But how large to make them? And would anyone want such a thing? I have no idea at all what would b...

They're in England, and I have never dealt with them- but they apparently have the rings in stock.

All the other sources I checked in my bookmarks are out of stock.

I was at Frank's cane and rush just today, in fact. About two hours ago. They'll also sell you rattan by the inch based on 9 foot p...

I don't know, Conal. The original listing doesn't show for me, so I have no idea what they want for that old one. I tend to buy stuff like that if its cheap enough and sock it away for projects later. While its true a lot of my "rainy day projects" wind up sold off or traded to other folks without m...

A 4 pound steel sledge with a rounded and polished face. The plackart is more or less set aside for now though, and I'm working on the helm. I tried my deadblow and my nylon hammer- the damned aluminum just laughed at me with much mockery.... And I'm down with a flu or cold bug for the moment, so I ...

Thats sounds like the easiest possible fix to me.

Copper burrs or copper rod I'm thinking- the soft metal could "squish" into the holes really well and seal leaks.

Re: repairing pinholes in cast iron cauldron?

Oh, I have a good idea how much work it'd be. I've got photo refs for some viking cook pots done in the spangenhelm manner- solid bottom, and overlapped plates running up the sides. Most of them seem to be rather small...But that may be a case of only small ones being found at dig sites because they...

Re: repairing pinholes in cast iron cauldron?

Original listing not showing.

You know, I've been intrigued by the idea of pounding out a cookpot for a while.

Mostly just to do it- but I was debating mild steel, or copper.
I wouldn't want to make one in brass.. Though I'm sure there may have been examples back in the day.

Definitely a spun top helm. You can still see the spinning marks all over the top, inside and out. It looks deeper than the spun tops I have seen out of India and Pakistan, but thats just an off the cuff observation. There might have been as many as a hundred or more armorers in the SCA making these...

Re: looking for a couple of cheap things...

If you're not planning to fight in it, you do not need a padded garment under mail. A tunic would do- and would be more comfortable because the bulk from a gambeson's padded fill would be hot and restrict movement a bit. I've worn a fair amount of mail for costuming, as well as fighting. And if I am...
