These are looking mighty nice. :)

Just out of curiosity-
How do you form pommels?

Welded shell, or cast and ground?

I've seen and admired your work for years- always wondered about that.

Organization?
What is this rare beast of which you speak?

Heh.
My shop space is a howling chaos of randomly jumbled tools that I have vowed to clean and arrange at least once a month for the last 5 or 6 years...
Hasn't happened yet.

Re: Cheap Metal/Leather armor

Hm, the black steel wire I get locally out of Lowe's in 2 1/2 pound rolls is actually as hard as galvanized. (Yes, I have tested both side by side...Lot of work to cut it with wire cutters by hand!) Its 16 gauge wire, and needs to have a ton of oil wiped off before you can wind it. In smaller rings,...

Re: Coat of Plates -- shaping plates?

Take a 2X4. Gouge out a slot down the center of the flat. Dish the plates into this. For plates to line the inside of a harness, they don't need more than vague planishing... If at all. You can bend them over an empty propane fuel cylinder, if you have a hand torch. You can use an old, empty fire ex...

I could be wrong...But the helmet in the first image- The eyeslot seems to me to be too high on the helm. It looks to be up around the level of a man's forehead at the hairline... Well above his eyes. Either it was intended that the wearer bend WAY over to see out of it...Or its a post period fake. ...

I love the 1450s era English kit. That Osprey book on the English knight is my main reference at the moment, and I find conflicting photos of the Coventry sallet. Wait a minute.... Jaeger, did you used to display and sell in the art show at Loscon, many years ago? It took a week or so for me to remember why the name seemed so familiar. Re: Plaque belt brain storming

I have written sources that claim the plaque belt fell out of favor in the early 15th century. However, I have also found claims it survived for some time into the 15th- so I am going to guess there are conflicting sources of evidence. For the kit I am working on- Plackart, sallet and minimal plate ...

For SCA combat at least, thin brass has the potential to get destroyed rather quickly. Most of us prefer solid pieces, or at least thick hollow work that has an enhanced chance of survival through years of melees, tourneys and accidents. (Originals were unlikely to be thrown into a bag, dropped down...

Theres a fair number of breastplates from the late period with holes or bolts for the attachment of an extra plastron. Now theres a thought. Since its all simple curved iron strips, if you could disassemble the more complex parts and stack it all, it would fit into a relatively small package inside a knapsack, wouldn't it? For marching inside friendly territory, where fear of attack was slim or nonexistent, it would...

The biggest problem with buying stainless scrap locally is that the alloy will be a mystery. Anything that will cut the shafts that is handy.

I usually use a hacksaw, and grind the shank reasonably smooth and level before putting it in to rivet.

We usually describe this sort of thing as laminated "Top to bottom" or "bottom to top". Top to bottom means the first row is laid on top and the subsequent lames lie over it, going down. This means the lames fold outwards, away from the body when you bend over. (The exposed edge is over the edge of ...
