Re: Helmet plaque.

Awesome story and plaque.

But I think I would have given into temptation to put an ornate codpiece on the cherub....Just for that extra little bit of decoration, of course. ;P

Hal, what thickness?
And can you do any cutting yourself, or do you need it already cut in a circle?

Another good question would be, whats it for?

Gods of metal, how I WISH I had room for an English wheel! :D Haven't had time or room to work on much except knives for several months- The room mate has finally gotten the stacked folding tables that crowded me out of my sheet metal working space gone...Now I just need to clean things up enough to...

Re: Russian style Falchions ?

The thought occurs to me that if large, shallow fullers were machine cut into the flats- like a saber, leaving the edge and spine enough meat- then weight issues might be overcome without excessive flexing issues. I've been debating BOTN weapons myself lately...But I need to see one, or get better i...

Hmm.. Even in spring steel I think I'd go minimum 14 gauge just for peace of mind.

Re: Fur, where can I find it?

Brettun's has some scraps-

http://www.brettunsvillage.com/leather/haironhides.html

Moscow hide and fur has a little of everything-

http://www.hideandfur.com/

I'd have to think awhile to come up with other links-its been forever since I had reason to look for hair on hides.

Re: Fur, where can I find it?

Hm, what kind of fur does make a difference. Rabbit fur is about as cheap as it gets- $3 to $5 average for a pelt. Fox or coyote isn't too hard to get- but its nowhere near that cheap. Bobcat is near the top end of price- and bear isn't legal to buy or sell in some states. What do you need it for? T...

Yep. The "ritual object" default. :) Its such a common dodge that a joke got made about it on Stargate SG1... I kind of wish I could tune in say, a thousand years from now when things like Atari 2600 consoles get labeled "ritual objects" in future museums because no one could figure out what the hel...

Interesting!
I have never seen this before.

My first though was that it looked an awful lot like a walking stick or cane- then I saw the swivel at the butt.
My second thought was to wonder if it could have been an ice axe.

Matched knife and pricker feast set auction- Auction ended.

Auction ended. I had an odd shaped piece of stock left over after making a seax a while back- and its shape suggested one of the "butcher" table knives of the middle ages. So I made it into a blade...And then thought it would be pretty cool if it had a matching pricker... So here they are. Carbon st...

57 inches is an enormous breastplate. Add that he is looking for a muscelata, And pricing such a thing becomes a minor nightmare. The sculpting is the pricey part- theres a lot of folks wearing the mass produced ones that cost maybe $100-$150 or so. But those are something closer to a 42-44 inch che...

Re: WTS ELK FUR/SKIN

Actually, hair on elk or deer is the worst thing to make garments or daily use items from. The long hairs are hollow and fragile, and they break off very easily from friction. So a hair on deer or elk hide begins to shed vigorously almost immediately, and never stops as long as theres any long hair ...

You know, a brig type fauld never occurred to me before. Its an elegant solution to a problem I have been having myself over what to do for a 14th century kit based around a globose, or a 7 piece Churbourg. I don't like the globose and fauld for looks, personally. Call me an iconoclast, but it alway...

Small knife for auction- Closed.

Up for auction is a small utility/belt knife I finished a while back. The blade is carbon steel of course, sharp and a bit over five and half inches long, with my usual shiny finish. Whittle tang construction. Made from 3/16" stock, so its a very solid little knife that will serve for a lifetime. It...

Yes, you certainly can- But I actually looked into making a vacuform plastic and aluminum one for a friend when the first Iron Man movie came out, and had to reluctantly tell him it was beyond what I could commit to making. Much of it is little pieces very closely fitted, so its not that bad in term...

Well, I got some feedback on sizes from another post, so I'm working on the first set. Thanks for the comments. :)

I was worried that it didn't look "seaxy" enough, since its rather different for the more commonly seen variations.
But I now feel better about it, and since I like how its turned out in shape- I didn't really want to change it.

Scandinavian seax blade in progress- completed, with pics.

I'm working on a scandinavian patterned seax- As it sits right now, its slightly leaf shaped, as you can see. The blade is not quite 16 inches long. The scandinavian ones I have references for all seem to have more or less untapered, "straight" blades with a similar upswept point. I like the slight ...
