Re: Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newb

Nah, don't worry about it. :) This is a project that got started from an experience a couple of friends had a long time ago, and I am not even sure it'll ever be all that useful. I'm not happy with the sallet I drew in the initial sketch- or the bascinet, for that matter. (Sallets are my personal fa...

Re: Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newb

Hmm....Frogmouth? I'm sorry, but honestly? I can't remember ever seeing one on the field. Some form of drawn study of helmets that goes into depth would be cool to do- but unless I commit to something like a full book project, I can't see myself doing one. Oh crap.... Now you've done it. But thats l...

Re: Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newb

Umm.....Its not to show them how to make armor- its to allow them to identify specific categories of helmet so they don't have to stumble around in the dark when they want to ask questions, because they have no frame of reference to start. The reason I came up with this idea originally was talking w...

Re: Rawhide

Ah yes. Definitely agreed. I thought you meant someone should pull ALL the flesh off before salting- and thats how skinning cuts happen and ruin hides. Common mistake of the inexperienced, so I felt I should clarify. Especially since I actually made that mistake when I was 12, helping my grandfather...

Re: Rawhide

There shouldn't be much meat left on it once skinned- if there is, someone was really sloppy. We didn't bother removing meat scraps before salting- heavy enough salt will take care of small bits clinging to the hide, and they all came off the same during fleshing. Some meat bits will not come off ea...

The pants were made for paintball, which is why the seat reinforcement was added. I have fought in them, and kept them around as my backup rapier pants. I have new rapier pants.. So I no longer need these and have not used them in years. The tunic was made for Dagorhir fighting- Boffers, without arm...

Uhhh.... As someone who grew up in a taxidermy shop, and dealt with hides every day for much of my life... Don't wash it if the weather is warm. Water and green hides do NOT mix. Interestingly, I just found the Caid youth combat page. It says aluminum is allowed, but steel is not- no adult helms are considered acceptable due to size and weight. I recommends such things as hockey helmets, 18 gauge import helms and the like. I would have to say though, you won't find anyone wi...

Considering how many they needed to make, (A hundred sets? More than that?) I would not be surprised if they made a stamping die for the basic pieces of major components, and assembled by hand. The wings might well not be fastened down by anything but a few flush rivets and some epoxy along the back...

Re: Reinforcing bear skin rug w/ leather backing - possible?

Okay. I grew up in a family taxidermy shop, and bearskin is something I know rather well from working with it. First question- How old is it? If it dates to the 1960s or earlier, its likely to be sulphuric acid tanned. If it is, its either already very brittle/easily torn, or will be. In that case, ...

Slightly pointed should be correct. My only real idea on how to pattern would be to cut a piece of thick fabric and lie it on a shoe top, trimming until it fits closely. Then make the mail pieces fit the fabric pattern. Since mail can "squish" a bit, but not stretch, I would err on the side of makin...

Why not a separate CotT at both wars?

I know theres folks that can't make both, but there should be enough fighters who can manage the requirements to make a decent showing at GWW and Estrella.
