Re: Making aluminum knees- gauge suggestions?
I've actually got an unfinished basket hilt in .090 T6 in the garage. Took me a couple of days to get the pieces dished enough to rivet them together, and by the point I was done doing that, I gave up. I might post a pic- Not sure if the thing is really worth ever trying to finish up into a usable p...

Re: Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newb
So, lets see. The list should include some asian styles, turk and polish, and maybe one or two very late types like burgs and close helms. If I assume that only one real greathelm is included for now, I think I can get 15 or so on the page with enough room for bare text descriptions. This is a hard ...

Re: Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newb
Vladimir- These are close to what I have in mind for the final version- though the bottom one is incredibly "busy" with too many images, and I find it visually confusing. (So many, theres no room for text.) Obviously, I'm going to need to make a complete list of what exactly is going on the final ve...

Re: Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newb
Thanks for the comments, guys. Yes, the finished version will have names- though approximate dates are a good idea I had not thought of. A few folks are kind if missing the point though, so I will clarify. The sheet is a bare bones starting point. As such, it is intended for people with no backgroun...

West coast combat of the thirty?
Since I did not know where else to post the question.... Has anyone ever brought up the subject of a combat of the thirty on the west coast? I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get the time and the money together at the same time to attend a Pennsic, and the only other version of the event I have foun...

Work in progress- basic SCA helm types ID sheet for newbies
This is far from finished- but I had an idea from a post last week that seemed like a good one. A sheet or sheets of basic SCA helm types that newbies could look at to familiarize themselves with the most common styles of helm in SCA usage. I'll declare the finished version free for general SCA use ...

Re: friend wants to rust arms purposely
I second plum brown, if you want an even finish. If you are looking for an uneven, "picked it up out of a turnip patch" look... Peeing on it will work. The uneven nature of the splash will give you a variable amount of rusting. You could also sweat into it, then stuff it in a sweat soaked duffel bag...

As for Polish winged hussars. They have always had a special place in my heart for their truly magnificent armor and kit. So I congratulate you and your husband both on your choice of persona. Re: WTB: HElm for my Itty-Bitty girl head
Agreed. Measurements are the main thing. Style and period are just as important. The main measurement is around your head, level at the temples. Length of your neck is also important. I am sure I am forgetting one last measurement, but I'm being dense at the moment.... I am sure we have enough other...

Making aluminum knees- gauge suggestions?
Since my search-fu is weak.... When making poleyns in aluminum, what gauge would an experienced armourer suggest? Say, in softer and hard aluminums? I have some 16 gauge thats not butter soft, and I have made things like rapier guards from it that have handled some pretty serious abuse without so mu...

Re: WTB Any World War II rifles
I've always loved the m44 carbines. They are usually tack drivers, and the recoil is mild by my standards. I have an unfired, unissued Polish M44 that was the last one left at a small gun store about 10 years ago. They took the arsenal paper wrap off this one to show what the rest looked like. Those...

Re: Plaque belt brain storming
My thoughts for a while have been to make plaques in something like 1/8" thick brass stock and decorate the surface with punchwork. Rivet holes at the corners for attachment, and maybe enamel work if I feel ambitious. One type of belt I know I saw somewhere, was round plaques spaced between I beam s...

Re: "high tensile" steel
I've been thinking about buying one of these myself, just to experiment with. I'm thinking its probably a low grade spring steel, and KoA sells it cheap enough to be worth getting one for costuming, if not combat. I can certainly make maille myself, and have done so in the past- but its so time cons...

Rondels on late 14th century articulated poleyns?
I'm working on patterning right now, and that means I am using up leftover aluminum to work the bugs out of the patterns before I commit to steel. Now, this means the armor I make is not likely to be used for real fighting- though much of it could be. I'm planning to set most of these aside as costu...

Anything that creates a cavity will work to start. You can drill and chip, carve, saw or do anything at all that takes initial wood out. Then you just hammer the indentation down until its nice and smooth, to suit. Some folks have done techniques like burning out a cavity with charcoal briquettes or...

Yep. The Napoleonic breastplates were supposed to stand up to a musket ball at, I think 25 meters. Curious story, the initial order delivered did not stand up to this requirement.. So the French ordnance committee reduced the requirement to withstanding a musket ball at 50 meters... (The ranges are ...

Not to rain on your parade... But what you are asking for is repousse work. (I think I spelled it right?) And rather precise work at that, if the exact font style is to be replicated. Weldable reducing pipe fittings?
Something I found at a local metals place. They have a shelf full of dusty pipe fittings, some of them quite large. The description is that they are weldable, and they look like they were formed by metal spinning of some sort. The steel or iron is quite thick walled- on the 5 inch to 3 inch reductio...
