This will be the last dagger I make of this size, outside of commissions.
Future daggers for general sale will be more of the 7-9 inch range.
I'll be making some swords at some point, but I am not likely to make more large daggers of this type.

Re: Pointed tip riveted on ME helm help
I believe that would be the crest mount? Its usually used to mount some form of crest or tassle if its fairly tall. Cones like that are usually wrapped, welded and ground/sanded down, as Sevastian said. Its the least amount of work to make such a shape. They can be lathe turned, if you have a lathe....

I just scrub the surface with a green scrubby pad and oil it lightly.
Gives a nice patina with little effort.
And darkens a bit over time.

Re: Let's talk about templates.
I find templates invaluable as a starting point.
They give me the right basic scale and shape to work from- But I develop my own patterns from there.
They take a lot of the trouble and confusion out of making my own patterns.
But templates are not the answer for me.
Only a starting point.

Something like this?
http://www.harborfreight.com/5-lb-metal ... 67617.html
This is about as cheap as you can get for one thats not used.
Not much that can wrong with these things either.
The price is about the same as the one made by Lyman.

Still lots of nice stuff available- I may post more stuff after I dig around a bit. Been turning up more stuff I did not remember that I had, and no longer need. If you stick a tape measure against it tight, the height is a bit over 13 inches from the instep cutout in the exact center to the top edge.

Re: The badger's yard sale-Rapier stuff, loose bits
Friction. Its not wedged, but it tapers rather wider as it goes up, so its not possible for it to go flying off. It was a tiny bit loose after being on my wall for 10 years, but simply tapping it down a bit was enough to tighten it back up. -Badger- How's the axe head held on, just friction or a wed...

Unfinished front greaves for sale
Unfinished, but shaped 18 gauge mild steel front greaves. I was making these for myself, but as I got to the planishing stage, I decided I'd do them over in a slightly smaller size. The pattern I made them from was just a wee bit too large for my legs, and I changed my mind on what I was ultimately ...

Re: Riveting, curved pieces, and tight spaces
I was going to mention outside peening, but others have beaten me to it. :D Both inside and outside seem to have been used, but outside peening gives something our brothers in the battle of the nations have experienced- Domed rivet heads are easy to sheer or snip right off if hit with an axe or swor...

What goes with a sallet helmet? I think the generic term would be "Gothic". Brigs, plackarts, 15th century stuff in general. Anywhere from simple back and breast with a padded pourpoint to fluted style Germanic "points and dragon wings". (I remember 15th century German gothic described that way at s...

Found a video on youtube that showed the kind of pattern I was looking for.
I needed basic info on what kinds of shapes the plates should be- From there, I can draft a pattern set.
Now we'll see if I actually manage to finish the project.
