Hello Kerberus. While the Marshal's handbook only says "No crossbows may have modern pistol grips", I am fairly sure this would not be allowed on the field for SCA use, as its clearly modern in design. You are correct. Mild steel can only be case hardened on it's surface, using compounds baked on at high temperature and quenched.
