Re: small/medium seax auction
It uses whats called a whittle tang, and it is epoxied in place. (Whittles are the most common period tang on original knives from the period.) The pommel plate is attached to its own tang, which overlaps the blade tang down one side, and all completely filled with epoxy mixed with sawdust from shap...

Sold- small/medium seax auction closed
Auction closed/sold. Thanks all. Not sure whether to call this one a small or a medium seax. Razor sharp carbon steel, not quite 6 1/2 inch blade, 10 1/2 inches overall. 3/16ths inch thick- deeply flat beveled for the sharpest possibly edge. Rough mirror polished. Brass hardware. Walnut grip. I left...

Re: Making crossbow strings?
Well, the prod I have is too short to be a powermaster. Its got a quarter inch hole through the center, and a shiny spot where it was secured with a fender washer. I bought the prod here on the archive to fit to my existing tiller. I've been building the tiller for several months, and was going to u...

31 inches is sevral inches longer than the prod is.
So it can't be off a powermaster.
Thanks for the link though.
It is useful.

Making crossbow strings?
I have found several sites dealing- poorly- with making crossbow strings. But they all seem to lack one crucial bit of information. How do you determine the length you'll need for a string? The sites I have found are also mostly some vague text and maybe a pic or two without much in the way of usefu...

Re: Any Authentic Chinese / Japanese Sword Experts Here?
It frankly looks like a modern Chinese made piece, ground from a billet of commercial damascus. Theres a ton of artificially aged swords coming out of China now. Mostly cast bronze pieces, and some steel. But it all looks subtly "wrong" in some manner if examined closely. Thats about all I can tell ...

Re: Viking folding knives?
I am familiar with that one, but its not the one I meant. :) Turns out I do not currently have any antler of a size to try the idea- So I have to shelve it, or change what I had in mind. And I do have some pieces to finish before I am really free to play with random ideas again. So we'll see what ha...

Viking folding knives?
I remember at one point seeing a folding knife that was claimed to be viking or norse. The grip was antler, and the blade had a longish tail sticking out the back. You used it by holding down the tail against your palm when it was unfolded. Anyone know what the documentation for this is? Pics of ori...

I also recommend thermoplastic or vacuformed styrene. Son of a friend of mine made himself a suit about 8 years ago, and the most involved tool he used was a heat gun. In metal? Good luck finding an armourer willing to take it on as a project. Not saying you can't find one- But armourers who do medi...

I was figuring I'd have a look for you and see what turned up. :) I've worked with some of the unmarked stuff before, and its hard as hell to hammer in about 12 gauge. Aluminum shield thickness?
What is the best thickness for a shield made up in aluminum when you have no idea what the alloy is? The scrapyard has some stuff thats around 12 gauge to 1/8th inch...But its not marked in any way for alloy. So I have no clue whether its soft, or actually aircraft grade scraps. I'd certainly find o...

Large Irish Scian- Sold
This is now sold. Finally completed this beast of a dagger. Well.. More like a short sword. An Irish Scian, such as used by Kern in Ireland. (Or Skean... Though I am now told that spelling is more Scots than Irish.) The blade is a bit over 24 inches, carbon steel of 3/16th thickness. It is sharp, fl...

Too big to fit in my truck.
The couch was also missing one cushion and had all four wooden feet broken.
Not something that was worth salvaging as furniture, in my opinion.

I'll have to take pics after my doctor's appointment. However, I found a leather couch sitting streetside late last night, and helped myself to a fair sized bit of upholstery leather in pieces. None of the individual pieces are wider than maybe 16 inches or so; but the backing piece is a good 5 feet...

Re: wtb steel sword parts
well, as I said, I'm a bit swamped for the immediate future. Since I could not measure things personally, I would most likely provide guards with a smallish tang slot that can be filed out to fit, and pommels with a single hole drilled, that you can drill out as needed to fit what you have. I'd need...
