What kind of knives are people looking for? Feb 2014 edition

Once again, I find myself with steel and no clear ideas of what to do with it. Rather than make stuff at random... I'll ask what kinds of knives or daggers are people looking for right now? I have quarter inch brass, plus steel for guards and pommels. I am still short on leather for sheaths. I have ...

Re: Buy 2 get 1 free sale on books at Talbot's Fine Accessor

I have the complete late 14th century harness collection, and use it constantly. Its a good book, though I would have asked for a few more photos in some cases, where I had to use a bit of educated guesswork as to how the parts actually fit together, and which way was up when assembling. Re: Boffer Helm

This subject pops up from time to time. Most folks looking are thinking of around $30 to $50. You won't find many, (or any) armourers willing to make a youth helmet for under $75 to $100, as its roughly the same amount of work to make a "real" helmet that goes for double that price. Most folks modif...

Anyone making custom corsetry?

Asking for a friend. Shes looking to get a custom corset made, but she is plus sized and describes her measurements as "weird" (I do not have her measurements...Shes in Wyoming, and I am in SoCal.) So I am asking around as a favor for any tailors or seamstresses that do corsetry to see if anyone has...

Re: ATTENTION THOSE WHO HAVE ORDERS FROM SABRAKAKRAY

My symptoms took some time to develop. The doctor's best guess is that it was a viral infection of the lungs, but it got steadily worse over several months, making it harder and harder to breathe until I began to develop edema and retain water, swelling up and putting strain on my heart until I deve...

Re: Brass shoulder cops. One set. $50 and shipping

They were about as hard to dish as 18 gauge mild steel. Hammering and planishing would also work harden the metal of course. No way to judge dent resistance or durability without actual field service and observation over time, though. -Badger- these are cool as all get-out! any thoughts on how the b...

Brass shoulder cops. One set. $50 and shipping

Brass shoulder cops. 16 gauge yellow brass, mirror polish over planished surface for an interesting, faceted effect.. $50 and shipping. They'll fit inside a USPS flat rate box, so call it $15 to US addresses. (I'll need an address for a rate to another country.) Need a bit of quick cash to buy suppl...

Mushroom stakes for sale or trade

I made these two mushroom stakes a couple of months ago for a trade deal that fell through. They are made from the ends of cast iron handweights that I ground, shaped and polished. Then inserted and riveted into 24 inch heavy gas pipe. (Edited- Most likely cast iron rather than steel...) The large o...

I actually have almost as much experience working with styrene plastic as I do with metal. I built plastic model kits from maybe 5 years old, and did a lot of serious builds for model contests in my teens and early 20s. Then I started making costume and prop accessories, and lost interest in the con...

A bit off topic- cosplay commission work

This is a bit off topic, but it does qualify as armor work. I was commissioned a while back to do some armor for a friend's cosplay. The material is 12 gauge aluminum, and the helmet is pieced and riveted, then the seams were soldered with Alumalloy and sanded down. The helmet is actually 5 pieces, ...

I have discovered I have some scraps of mild steel in several gauges lying around, and thought I might do a bit of experimenting to use them up. Cheap sheet metal punch

I found something on ebay a little while ago that I did not expect. A cheap knockoff of a whitney-roper number 5 that cost me about $10 and shipping. Re: need a Helm for Battle of the Nations style combat

Oh, yes. I am a firm believer in heavy helms. Might make your neck muscles tire faster- But they can toughen up, and your skull can't. Theres a limit to whats practical in terms of what you can wear. But a 12 gauge helm is well within those limits. -Badger- Remember, weight soaks up damage.

Theres not much I can offer here, as weapons for live steel are outside of my experience as a knife and sword maker. I make using knives, and swords with live edges for the most part. Yes, its two pieced sections matched and fitted on the tang.
The tang is quite thick and solid, so theres no strength issues to worry about.
