Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

I made a Krug over 20 years ago. It was quite comfortable to fight in, but repairs were needed about every other time I went out in it. I would say that riveted rings are a necessity for durability. Theres Russian, and I think Polish examples as well. While it winds up sounding like "gamerspeak", pl...

Re: Large Ironbadger seax auction for December

Hi Hal.

Measurement "B" is about 1 3/4 inches.
Measurement "A" is about 1 7/8ths inches.

The blade tapers very slightly wider towards the point before the break/point drop.
Its quite subtle.

Re: Armouring tools in time for Christmas.

Sadly, I know if no good ways to reduce the stress from hunching over the tools except to do my work in short sessions. I do have an electric shiatsu massage chair pad- The ones with the rotating ball units as opposed to just a vibrating massager. It does help a bit- But its made for shorter people,...

Large Ironbadger seax auction for December- Ended

Seax has been sold. Thanks everyone. -Badger- This was actually cut from my antique steel around a year ago and set aside. Originally to be turned into a commission for a friend, he has changed his mind about exactly what he wants...So there was no more need to hold onto this blade blank. Suitable f...

Well, to update... I managed ot get a decent length of very thick walled pipe, and have begun the compression work. I really need to anneal before going on, but its beginning to look more greave-like. And I really should get the right leg started at least far enough to compare to the other while wor...

I definitely sympathize!

Just finished a seax, and I'm a mess.

No rush on my stake now, by the way.
February or March is soon enough. :D

Re: WTB Starter Helm

Head size is a must, if you are looking for a used helm. Tape measured around the crown of your head, just above the eyes. Armourers will need more measurements if they are making a helm to fit you specifically. Look at their sites, or ask for the specifics they require. Welcome aboard. :) -Badger-

Yes, the flat frontal shape as you note is a problem I intend to correct. (As noted in the original posting, and shown in the third image.) For now, I lack a good stake and raising hammers for that, so changing the line of the front is really hard at the moment. I did get a little of the shape I wan...

Re: Greaves/schinbalds in progress

Thanks for the advice, Wade. The shape is not "set" just yet. How much I can tinker with it will be a function of available time, as the harness right now is a pile of mostly shaped parts lying on a bench... The breastplate, spalders, knee cops and cuisses are all dished and need planishing/sanding....

I'm afraid that if you want wooden bolts, the only options will be either people making them one at a time, or making your own. The good news is, making your own isn't that hard to do if you have tools and a place to do it. If not, you'll have to find someone making more authentic bolts, and they ar...

Greaves/schinbalds in progress

Not sure whether to call these greaves, schinbalds or gutters, frankly. I finally got off my fat butt last night and got started on these. The version shown is the left leg, about 2 hours of work after cutting to shape it to this point. (Well...maybe 20 minutes to get the basic shape, and 2 hours of...

What type of knife should I make this into?

I have a blade I found again recently. Its the last one made from a 25 foot bar of 1095 steel I got way back in 1980, and I believe I ground it to this shape and sanded it about '89 or so. I have to get around to heat treating and sharpening it, but I am frankly stumped as to what to make it into. I...

A rule of thumb for me when making greatcoats and tunics for American civil war, was three yards for a frock coat, five yards for a greatcoat. In making costumes, I have found that three yards is the best default for buying what I use for anything that goes around the body. I usually don't use it al...

But when do I glue nickles onto it? 8) -Badger- C clamp it to the edge of the work bench and use a thin cut off disk or three in the angle grinder. now if you live in India I say sit on the ground hold the blade in your toes and let the blind kid hold the chisel while you bash at it for a week.

A problem...Steel cutting

Not really armor, but an amusing problem nonetheless. I recently acquired a large circular saw blade. Like, 27 inches in diameter. It turns out to be so large and heavy that I cannot cut it up with cutoff wheels mounted on my bench grinder. So I have to see if I can find and set up the angle grinder...
