Dyeing leather ?

So I'm going to buy a long strip of leather from Tandy's for a leather belt. Since I know near to nothing about leather, does dyeing leather prolong the leather's life? I was planning on just leaving the natural color for my belt, but it got me thinking, *why don't I see people sell belts with the n...

What leather for brig gorget ?

My next project is brig gorget, similar to this one. What size and type of leather would work? :Note: I would be using it for SCA heavy.

What rawhide mallet to get?

I'm looking at Garland's rawhide hammers, and since they are not cheap I only want to get one for now. Out of the 5 sizes( 1.5, 2, 2.75, 4, 6.5 lb) what one is the most useful? Or is heavier always better?

But of course mine aren't going to be Hardened Tempered, so is 16g right for something not tempered? Mines galvy whic...

Re: Galvanized sheet metal?

. . . wouldn't it be better to totally avoid galvanized sheets for armouring? I mean, why risk it? None of us know where our armour will go after the sale, so imagine a customer (who forgot your warning) decides a year later to use heat on his (your) armour to do some fancy artwork or who knows wha...

Galvanized sheet metal?

I have a load of galvanized metal on the farm. Should I use it for armoring? Does anyone else use galvanized sheet metal? I'm glad to use because I don't have much excess money laying around. But kinda just curious about it, does it got anything negative about it for using it for armor? etc..... May...

Yea I met somebody who does this. He said before they shoot the anvil they have to take an X-ray of the anvil to make sure it doesn't have any cracks. Or you could end up with a shrapnel bomb, like Thomas Powers said.

1. Any record of romans, wearing anything similar to that of the Greek Linen cuirass? 2. Any record of romans using leather body armor? 3. What you're likely to find at Lowes/Home Depot is probably a 3 foot section of black iron pipe to use as a handle. I don't have the diameter you'd need handy, but you should be able to measure the end of your shear and figure out what pipe size you need. So does this item have a specific name? Or i...
