Ah, I just remembered - olive oil would have been available to most medieval societies that had any decent sort of trade. I've tried it, and didn't like it as well as animal fat. The excess tends to pool or form drops instead of run off. Linseed oil seems to work well on weapons, I have a spear that...

Where would one get natural oils? Talk to a taxidermist, they probably throw away garbage bags full of the fat during black bear season - in fact, the bear oil/grease I have came from a +/- 75# garbage bag full that a taxidermist saved for us. Render it down, and Bob's your Uncle. For unsalted lard...

Most of the 18th reenactors I know will not put petroleum oils or synthetics on (or in) their guns. The first thing they do with a new gun is to use acetone or alcohol to strip off every trace of modern oils, then dry and grease them. To keep from having to detail-strip the lock, the whole thing is ...

The first thing I'd do is remount your spaulder, it isn't on the point of the shoulder where it needs to be both for appearance and for protection. While you have it off, you can add a scalloped leather edge to it. I'd punch two small holes about 1" apart and centered near the top edge, and &qu...

Hey Freiman,

Crashpads makes a hockey rig that has about an inch of heavy padding, get yourself four pairs before you come over. One for your butt, one for each arm, and one to wear over your helmet. God save your ribs, 'cause I know these guys won't.

Possibly, but not probably. You're most likely to find it in the German states, Italy, and the Levant. Byzantium and Southern France are possibilities as well.

If you'll narrow your question in time and place, you'll get better answers.

Forget about the terminally lazy for a minute and what we have left is the Sincere but Ignorant (like me, for instance). These folks can be turned into True Believers if treated civilly. Let's assume that Joe Newguy thinks he might be interested in portraying a man at arms from either Upper Elbonia ...

Sounds like you have it pegged. If it is just for you, you probably don't need the bell; you can then set the tent up with one side up as an awning, if that is of interest to you. Do get the door if you buy the bell, worth every penny to ventilate on a hot day. ++Tasha on that. I have a small wedge...

you might try roughing up the steel a bit. That isn't how it works. The sharp flint shaves off a tiny sliver of steel which heats up as it separates from the striker, throwing tiny pieces of glowing steel into your char. Roughing up the striker only chips your flint, dulling it faster. Learned this...
