Ah, I just remembered - olive oil would have been available to most medieval societies that had any decent sort of trade. I've tried it, and didn't like it as well as animal fat. The excess tends to pool or form drops instead of run off. Linseed oil seems to work well on weapons, I have a spear that...

Where would one get natural oils? Talk to a taxidermist, they probably throw away garbage bags full of the fat during black bear season - in fact, the bear oil/grease I have came from a +/- 75# garbage bag full that a taxidermist saved for us. Render it down, and Bob's your Uncle. For unsalted lard...

Most of the 18th reenactors I know will not put petroleum oils or synthetics on (or in) their guns. The first thing they do with a new gun is to use acetone or alcohol to strip off every trace of modern oils, then dry and grease them. To keep from having to detail-strip the lock, the whole thing is ...

Thanks again, guys, you've saved me re-enacting some of your experiments. I'm trying to get back into SCA combat after some physical setbacks, and I'm working on hidden sports equipment to keep the weight down until I can rebuild this creaky body. I've bought a bunch of sports stuff that I don't lik...

Bob - did your lower back issue respond to message at all? Mine does for a short period of time. The MT says I should have a more in-depth look at it. The doc says it's probably arthritis but that if it doesn't respond to NSAIs that I may want a specialist to examine me. I don't have access to a ma...

Go to http://www.hockeymonkey.com/ and search for "neck". They have at least one version of it. Good idea, by the way.

I highly recommend the nutty buddy. They are a bit more expensive than the alternative mentioned earlier. Make sure you check out the video on the site. www.nuttybuddy.com They are meant to be worn in a jock over compression shorts, but they are the best of three cups I tried out. How do these stan...

Why people don't "just Google it", a rebuttal
Forget about the terminally lazy for a minute and what we have left is the Sincere but Ignorant (like me, for instance). These folks can be turned into True Believers if treated civilly. Let's assume that Joe Newguy thinks he might be interested in portraying a man at arms from either Upper Elbonia ...

Sounds like you have it pegged. If it is just for you, you probably don't need the bell; you can then set the tent up with one side up as an awning, if that is of interest to you. Do get the door if you buy the bell, worth every penny to ventilate on a hot day. ++Tasha on that. I have a small wedge...

Here are some other tips I think will help: 1. Get everything you need rounded up and within arm's reach before you start . You need char, tow or cedar bark, tinder, kindling, and several pieces of split small firewood. 2. Be generous with your materials. Use a piece of char the size of your palm, m...

you might try roughing up the steel a bit. That isn't how it works. The sharp flint shaves off a tiny sliver of steel which heats up as it separates from the striker, throwing tiny pieces of glowing steel into your char. Roughing up the striker only chips your flint, dulling it faster. Learned this...
