Lacis It's sold as hand-sewing thread, but it runs through both my sewing machines just fine. It's not quite as uniform as commercial thread, you'll need to occasionally check the bobbin area to remove the fuzz that gathers there. I've been told by a couple of people that the thread from Wooded Ham...

I almost never buy any place but Siegel (the link Neil Howard posted. Free shipping on orders over $75, and they've dropped the old requirement for a retail license to get the posted price. If you're unsure of how their pricing works just call your order in, the order takers are knowledgeable - in f...

I tried the replacement approach, and found I seemed to always have something in my camp that was wrong. I'm doing better now. I started from scratch - if it isn't as right as I can get it, it stays home. A side benefit is that I don't haul all that junk I never used anyway. To me, it isn't about ho...

I have a feather bed. When we're in the cabins, I sleep on a rope bed with a straw tick on it and the feather bed on that, a common arrangement in the 18thC (which is what I spend most of my time doing these days). It's really more comfortable than my bed at home, if you take time to fluff and arran...

I've slept beside the fire on the ground, with just a blanket, two of the last three events I've attended. If a broken down old man like me can do it, you whippersnappers won't suffer a bit for the experiment. Hint - it's a lot more comfy on the ground by the fire than on a mattress in a cold tent. ...

To me, a farb is someone who does something that he or she knows (or unquestionably should know) is wrong and is unnecessarily wrong as well. I don't think I use that word, except to tease friends who are doing things right by picking out the best piece of their kit and making some ridiculous remark...

There are others, Gwen, but it seems most folks would rather argue about politics, religion, or the contructs of their group rules than to discuss history. The same seems to be true of 18th century sites. If the one I put up this fall doesn't make it within a year, I'm going to quit wasting time and...

They should stretch, if they aren't cooperating just wet them and wear them until they dry, then apply some kind of leather dressing (I use tallow with a little beeswax in it). There are some "slights" to walking in softsoled shoes without heels. Most of us today walk like we're mad at the ground, s...

Jesse,
There's braintan moose for sale at www.braintan.com , they sell it by quarter hide so you don't have to spend so much at once.
You probably know a lot more about it than I do, but the folks who wear braintan mocassins say that the moose is tougher, tighter grain, and less stretchy.
