If you'll browse though this site, http://mailbox.univie.ac.at/~kochr3/mendel/m_inh.htm you'll find period art of many of the steps in making maille. If you can use visual aids in your presentation, it's hard to beat the real thing. Each drawing is dated. [This message has been edited by Bob Hurley ...

Hello Matthew, I've been here at the Archive since it began, and I've seen some of the posts. I haven't been one of those posting, but your armour doesn't look like a good reproduction of armour from the particular periods you say it represents. I only have photos of both to compare, so I can't say ...

A D-shaped cross section is typical of most European self bows (true long bows). Mine came from www.woodbows.com
For the Hun bow, try www.horsebows.com - I've shot one of them, and they are amazing.

I share the personal disappointment that I didn't retain more of Bob's teachings, but at the same time, I'm glad I got the overview that his more comprehensive teaching imparts as it serves as a roadmap for future learning. With luck, I'll get to repeat the training in more manageable (for me) pieces.

For some information on the helm's owner that will help date the helm, you might find something useful here: http://www.castlewales.com/pembrdg.html The site notes that Sir Richard Pembridge, a member of the Order of the Garter, fell somewhat into disfavor because of his refusal to go to Ireland as ...

You could call H.E. and ask, even though Gwen and Jeff are in England someone else there could help. If you prefer to make your own heavy laces, Wooded Hamlet at www.woodedhamlet.com carries a braided linen cord (in colors, IIRC), and the brass aiglets can be found in the "Native American crafts" se...

Janet Arnold's "Patterns of Fashion - The cut and construction of clothes for men and women c1560-1620" would be a big help, if you don't want to buy it you can look at a copy through Interlibrary Loan. It contains historic art, pictures, deconstructions and comments about artifacts, and scaled draw...

How about a full speed activity to break things up? One of our shire's more popular exercises is a "round robin" - you assemble all the fighters in a big loose circle, and each person takes a turn stepping into the middle, and taking on each other person in the circle. When you've finished you go ba...

Sir Conal, This is absolutely the best news I've ever heard for the SCA. I'd like to see a bit more "wiggle room" for the marshallate to approve experiments, which I understand now are bounded by Society rules. I wouldn't suggest that any rule be loosened without having the opportunity to experiment...

For gloves, I like a pair of deerskin "drivers", just a plain closefitting pair of soft but tough leather gloves. There are some goatskin gloves that are similar. If you have a store near you that caters to the rodeo crowd, you'll find a great selection there - slightly expensive, but worth it. I se...
