Properly made gambesons work very well. I had a Jupon (pretty much the same thing but for 14th c) that I had to stop wearing beause I could not feel shots and was simply walking through shots. err...no. Guilty as charged, I try to get my oponent to hit me first--for whatever reason, it makes me fight better. I'll hit first if the wait gets silly, but I try pretty hard not to.
