Re: Pictures of the Deed at GW?
I agree, this was my second Gulf Wars and my first time participating in a Deed/CoT style event. There were some great people out there and I'd love to see what it looked like from outside my klapvisor.

Re: War Shield
Not to get too into the echo chamber here, but, yeah, "war doors" are not optimal shields in most situations. If you are in a unit that will be training together and can maintain some semblance of cohesion in a melee then they become significantly more viable. If properly supported they can also wor...

Re: No Mind. Do you use it & How?
If I do not seek it by creating the environment for it to exist, then I will never find it. And that's what it feels like: Finding it. Thinking of it like this is more useful, in my experience, than thinking of it as a switch. As others have pointed out, if you think of the void as something you ca...

Re: Gauging interest titanium wisby gauntlets
I'd be very interested though it may be a while before I could buy them.
As far as price I can't really comment on that. These are super killer looking and if they hold up as well as they look you could probably ask a fair amount for them.

Fun Stuff! White wagon wheel on a red background with a black hose-like edging at 27 seconds in and reappearing later. Why does that look familiar? Is that used by anyone in the SCA? Sean It's not a wheel, but isn't AEthelmearc's heraldry gules, a carbuncle argent (it looks like a wheel at a distan...

Glaukos,
It would be a shame to see such gallantry go unanswered. As much as I am able I will answer your challenge.

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
I guess, on a related note, do we know when the survey data will be released to the public (if ever)? Having that will, I think, be very helpful in allowing "the powers that be" in the society to determine a plan of action and discuss the various alternatives.

Most of this has been said before but is worth repeating: 1) AB stuff is incredibly durable. My first and current helms were made by AB and are still going strong (seeing how I block with my face a lot this says something). 2) Their stuff is cheap. It is not the cheapest per say but it is cheap. If ...

Re: Byzantine Shields of the 14th Century
By the time the 14th century rolled around there wasn't really a set "all Byzantines used shield style X". In the mid/late part of the century there were little (if any) professional army elements and the empire subsisted on mostly militia and mercenaries to keep itself safe. The Empire ha...

It looks like a falx, a type of blade used by Thracians and Dacians back in the day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falx Here's a picture of one sans handle. Look in the upper left corner of the table for it and imagine it with a wooden grip. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/da/Da...

Is it possible that he's doing it because he's throwing the shot slow (so over exaggerating the movements to feel what it's like)? Does he do it when he throws the shot at speed?

This entire thread can be summed up with this quote: And the reason for conflict is exactly the same as the problem with that aweful SCA meme, "The Dream". The dream part is fine. It the "The" part that is fucked up. This discussion is the exact same as the one surrounding combat...

Not to take away from the cost of awesomeness conversation, I just wanted to comment on this quote: I'm probably too nice, but I'd just like some clarification on how you guys pull of not being nice, and not being considered an ass by the general public. Few people can be THAT good at acting. Generally speaking, their true nature shows up, in one direction or the other. It is QUITE possible that the face they show the SCA is their TRUE one, and circumstances lead them to adopt a false impression in their real life. . I agree with this completely. T...

Palaiologan Byzantine, 1330
I get that they where in a decline at this point, but I am wondering how Latin/Greek where the imperial soldiers who served Constantinople in their armor and weapons during the 14th century. Specifically I wonder about armor (was lamellar still in use) and helmet (had Latin style helmets like the ba...

Use a contrasting color on the thrusting tip or something that squeaks. I seriously laughed when I read this. I'm going to find a clown nose and attach it to the end of the next sword I make. But seriously, this doesn't overly bother me. The self-marshalling we apply is a dual burden. It burdens th...
