Re: Another Riveted Maille Question: Rivet Holes!!
It will work eventually! Riveted maille is just finicky and takes some playing around. Once you get it "right," you will find the process will speed up.

Re: Another Riveted Maille Question: Rivet Holes!!
First, it definitely looks like you have enough leverage, so you are ok there. Your drift miiight be a touch too short with the angle, but that all depends on your rings and how thick they are after flattening. Something to try to get your drift ground right for your rings would be place a ring on t...

Re: Another Riveted Maille Question: Rivet Holes!!
Yes, I think your problem lies with the bottom die. What I do is make a rivet that is the right size for the ring, then make a drift to the same size. Ideally you don't want extra space in the drifted hole. To make the bottom die, I make a drift that is exactly the same shape but a bit larger, so th...

Re: Another Riveted Maille Question: Rivet Holes!!
Well with looking at that link, I have to assume you made the depression in the bottom die round. I would suspect thats where your problem lies. My tongs are different than that pair in the link, but the concept can carry over. I heated the bottom die to about orange, then taped a larger drift into ...

Re: How acceptable are unplanished/minorly planished items
I think it depends on how lumpy or smooth the piece is after the initial rough forming. I tend to planish to get rid of low and high spots and deep hammer marks. I'm not attempting to create a near mirror, faceted finish with planishing. I start a little thicker than most to allow for material remov...

German Gothic rerebrace question
Tomorrow I was planning on getting my rerebraces started. I'm using the Archduke Sigismund of Tyrol suit as a reference. I have a pattern layed out and reference lines for the fluting. Then the question came up while I was mentally walking myself through the steps... Flute before or after rolling th...

Good idea on the hole for punching out rivets, maybe on the other corner put in a divot the same size as a 3/16" rivet for a makeshift set, no crushed rivet heads while setting the rivet.

Re: Hal's crazy idea # 347.01
The groove could be made into a rounded v shape for those who like to rough in flutes with a chisel. Or a u shape. Or you can do both, half the length a v, the other half a u. Don't mind me, just throwing ideas out there and see if any spark your imagination.

Re: Hammers/other tools for beginner amourer
Never under estimate how much a ball pien hammer can do. Watched Mac raise a "helm skull" two years ago using a ball pien, and it had not been reground into a raising hammer. Yes, specialty hammers make things easier, but for a beginner a few ball piens go FAR. I tend to collect hammers as I need th...

Re: What patterns do people want to see in a pattern archive
I think I was misunderstood. With raising, you start from basic shapes, like rectangles, circles, etc with enough material to allow you to raise the shapes you want, then trim the excess off. Raising is an art, way different process than dishing/welding. If someone wants to learn how to raise, the s...

Exactly. Like how late 14th century pig face visors would be raised from a rectangle, or raised from a welded cone.

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
I am personally an advocate for stepping away from the use of bar grills, as well as 1" wide eye slots whether it be a bar grill or plate visor. But! That is a personal choice, as much as its ones personal choice to just follow minimums for armour or to go all out full cap-a-pie or somewhere in betw...

Re: Setting up a burner for doing hot work?
I bought one of those harbour freight weed burners and I rarely use it. I just use o/a with a rosebud or a welding tip depending on how local or wide spread of heat I want. If I was to get one of those trex burners, I would just build the Eric Thing setup.

Finally upgraded to a better auto darkening welding mask today... Holy crap I can actually see what I'm welding, while I'm welding! Re: Hal's crazy idea # 347.01
A feasible way for this to work would be the tools rotating on a horizontal axis, but that creates a problem. If a round axle is used, an indexing mechanism is needed. Or, a square, hexagonal, or octagonal axle cane be used. Pull the axle out of the base, rotate, reinsert. But at that point, your or...
