Re: Negative Reveiw on Rough from the Hammer

Exactly what Samuel said, you are ordering a rough shaped item needing finishing unless he has stated otherwise. I have ordered a few times from Cet and never once had an issue. Yes, communications are a bit slow at times, but if he was sitting at the computer waiting for customer emails constantly,...

Re: adding a patina, natural vs artificial methods. question

Sculpt nouveau japanese brown is probably what you're looking for in chemical petinas. Can be applied hot or cold. The smallest bottle starts at $10. For maintenance I would imagine it would be fairly easy to reapply when needed. I have only used the oil blackening process for, well, blackening. Oth...

Re: embroidered hoods

Racaires hood is very nice! It is also the same color of my CdeB. The red and gold is a nice combination, but I'm still deciding on the hood color. All of those links have very nice examples that I like! I think dags will have to be a consideration as well. The most common colors off the top of my h...

Re: Help with riveted mail

I've seen two guys get zinc poisoning in high school. Both thought it would be a great idea to make a pipe to smoke weed from galvanized water pipe while we had a substitute in metal shop. They were in the hospital for awhile. Granted, they were directly inhaling the fumes, but they almost died. Of ...

So, I found out that my Christmas present this year will be an embroidered hood. She asked what I wanted on it. So now the search is on! All my saved links are now broken, as well as a huge majority provided by the search function here. I don't know if I got links to old pages on Larsdotter, but all...

Re: Complete beginner where to start

Simple spaulders are a good start. You will learn how to dish simple shapes and curling flat lames, as well as how to set rivets and simple leather working (cutting straps). You will only need a dishing form, a dishing hammer, drill, and something to curl the lames over like a section of 4" steel pi...

Re: Help with riveted mail

The wire I get is .047" and has a very thin layer of copper. Got a pretty hefty discount buying a 50 lb spool through my work. It tends to be a pain to work with until its annealed. If I have a minion for the day, I have them coil the wire

Re: Help with riveted mail

I use "18 gauge" welding wire, have used 16 gauge rebar wire. When I dealt with galvanized I bought a small charcoal grill specifically for annealing the galvanized stuff (will never be used for food). Filled it with charcoal and tons of cut rings, lit the charcoal, put on the lid. Got away as quick...

I usually get CO2 Argon mix for welding steel. I bought my bottle from my local welding suplly house. Also get it refilled there. I just use one of the smaller ones, comes up to about my waist.

I love my air tools but lack the space for a bigger tank. The die grinders are really useful for hard sand areas. I have both a 90* and straight grinders. Sanding drums, disks, and carbide bits are your friend :D

Ehhh at least from the price on the website, the money used for a plasma cutter would be better spent on a o/a setup. It would be way more versatile than a plasma cutter.

I already told him to start looking for a piece of rail. Was thinking about it on my way to work and decided I just plain don't have time to help him out.

Oh by the way, he's getting into building flintlock mechanisms, he was going to use this ASO to do some of the forging work.

Quick (or not so quick) ASO question

One of my friends picked up one of those ASO's from HF and quickly realized its very soft. He was asking me if its possible to attach a hard face on it. My two thoughts were A) braze some hard steel onto it (probably 3/8th 4130) or B) go the welding route and using a hardfacing rod and mill the surf...

He hasn't logged on since January 2013.
