need leather project ideas...
A few years ago I ordered some leather from Tandy and received what they called "sole, shield, and armour leather" instead. I thought I might find some use for it, but its been sitting there gathering dust. Its about 12 oz. and extremely stiff. So, any ideas on what non armour leather projects this ...

Re: Breastplate and backplate overlap
I'm just happy that I can pound on some metal when I have free time. That being said, I'm always trying to push myself and expand on what I "know" how to do. All the fluting and triangular rolls on the cuirasse I'm aiming for are intimidating as I have not done that much fluting and have yet to form...

Re: Breastplate and backplate overlap
I don't mind at all, this is all very on subject (kinda).
What I would do is work from the waist plate up, the the fauld. Working back to breast for each plate. But I might be wrong on that

Mac-
What is a useful size of proportional dividers for armour? I would be interested in making a set for myself as I usually draw to scale first, then full size later.

Re: Breastplate and backplate overlap
Oh wow, get all caught up at work, come home, and all of this happened :D That is a great sketch Mac, and very enlightening. Yes, I'm picking up one of those big notepads used for presentations and lecturers, drawing up full size front, side, and back view. Also detail of the pierce work, etc. I had...

Re: Breastplate and backplate overlap
Wade- I do have photos of the cuirasse in question, however all the images are from the AAF database so I'm not sure if its okay to post the pictures over here. I'm having a hard time finding any photos of it on google. I guess everyone is too distracted by the Sigismund armours right next to it. It...

Re: Rolling Edges - before or after shaping?
Someone here mentioned grinding the edge thinner to make the roll easier. Has anyone, or does anyone, hammer it thinner before rolling? Sometimes, it depends on what I want it to do. If the roll tapers to being really small, while being large in the center, then I'll hammer out the ends of the roll...

Re: double or triple planishing...
I agree with Sean. I just don't move on to sanding and polishing until I feel satisfied with the surface. I tend to do rough planishing first, taking care of the low and high spots, then get really in the zone with fine tuning the surface, planishing the living crap out of it. To me, if its not "rig...

Breastplate and backplate overlap
How much overlap between a breastplate and backplate? Current project I'm working on has a spring pin closure at the waist on both sides (or its a keyed post and hole... Don't have high enough resolution photos available to tell which it is). Before I start cutting and shaping steel I would like to ...

Re: What patterns do people want to see in a pattern archive
I have to agree TOMAR is lacking in a lot of areas and some information is just straight up stupid. But is there a more complete and better book available at the moment? No. So until that changes, its still the go to book besides the other standard reference books for pictures of real extant armour....

how about a beginners guide with simple projects, with VERY detailed instructions and how too. I had to learn alot by trial and error though, and using other peoples know how. Air hose and a stiff brush for the clothes. Then I take my shoes off before I go back in the house. Don't sit down on any furniture with your shop clothes on. Sometimes I'll take all my shop clothes off as soon as Im in the house if theyre that bad.

Brian Brown (knitebee on the AA) had made a set of "soupcans" with the flanges out of leather. The flange being leather just makes more sense to me.

Re: Putting together an apartment craft room. Tips?
A heat gun would be a better alternative to a propane torch, way more apartment friendly. Add wood rasp(s) or a draw knife to the list for shaping your rattan. You can do a little metal working... Butted maille. Theres a few leather working supplies that will make your life easier once you start wor...

Re: Period looking metal armour
Aluminum and stainless steel with a high polish looks decidedly modern. However, Ugo (I think it was Ugo) made some aluminum armour for a movie thats been aged. Im not sure what he did to achieve it, but it's definitely not polished, more of a satin sheen. Aluminum looks very "white" compared to ste...

Re: Help me choose my dream bandsaw?
Find an old 18" throat Delta. My high school shop was equiped with one, bought brand new in 1936. It was two wheeled, and five seconds of run up time after flipping the on switch that band saw was unstopable. Feeding in material too fast resulted in broken blades without any rpm drop. Only real PITA...
