Tor, I don't know for sure that anyone's ever tested an original to that degree, but just in terms of using a sword, one that won't flex will break eventually- and sooner, rather than later. I'd go with Allan of Mercenary's Tailor for the splint bracers and greaves; not only will they look spot on, or nearly so, his are the best prices I've ever seen for them. He's here on AA, send him a PM- I'm sure he'll make good if he's up for it. Very well made; I miss mine.

I had a really decent set but Gunther of Orkney made them while he was moonlighting w/Brand over at West Coast Armory; if Gunther were still there, I would recommend it but he isn't, its just Brand and I have no history w/the man, but others do.

The greaves look like the ones Allan from Mercenary's Tailor makes; I've seen the alternating brass and steel splint setup before.

If you can fit one of theirs off the rack, it is a good deal to get started but I wouldn't look for it to be a permanent solution for the reasons noted. Glad you walked away with only a broken nose. But just to clear something up, $350 is pretty cheap for a helmet. I don't know what your armour requirements are, but check out some of the SCA armourers like Icefacon, Windrose Armoury, Aesir Metalwyrks, Knotwolf, etc to get an idea what a good helmet...
