But that doesn't explain the Bayeaux Tapestry, and the very distinct look that is given to those helms. Therefore, I am inclined to believe that it was a less common helm at that exact time. The BT shows what seems to be a conical shaped spangen helm, but I haven't seen any extant examples for that...

Those upper straps were intended to connect to a gorget's edge. And you have a gorget. Now you want rivet holes in it.
