Re: gambeson, why and why not.
I am pro-gambeson, in a kingdom where that is often not the case. :) Back in the day, I fought in a thick quilted gamby (5 layers of cotton, if I remember correctly) as my main body armor (over my kidney belt). It got heavy when it got wet (which happened damned quick in the Ansteorran summer), but ...

Re: How thick do you make period helm liners?
I just got my new Ironmonger bascinet with period liner (Known World Treasures) passed by our local KM. I will admit, I was a little concerned, after all the reading I've done lately regarding concussions. The only shot that made me go "oof" was the Kata 1 shot (overhead snap), which jarred my neck ...

Both Crown Prince Lochlann and Earl Owen live in the northern part of Ansteorra (Dallas and Oklahoma City, respectively). I assume they can fight on a regular basis and they are both regular participants in crown tourney. I believe they are well acquainted with each other on the field.

Size ain't everything! I had the pleasure of meeting Viscount Eldrid Wolfsguard, KSCA, this weekend at the Ansteorran Crown Tournament. Sir Eldrid is shorter than you, but won the coronet of the Principality of the Sun back in about AS XXII (1988) and I know from experience that Atenveldt grows larg...

Re: So who's gonna win tomorrow?
What's the format? Starting tourney with a round robin format, 7 fighters per field, 4 fields. Top 4 from each field will advance. I liked the format. It gave everyone a chance to fight at least 6 fights, even if they didn't make it out of the Round Robin. (It's a bummer traveling half way across A...

Re: 2012 Fighting Resolutions
I honestly can't put my finger on it. Fighting in Crown inspired me for a bit, but I am sick of the political machine of the SCA. I can't give a year of my life attending meetings and dealing with bullshit. The local practice is quite boring (no offense to the local guys) and I don't have the energ...

Re: 2012 Fighting Resolutions
My resolutions last year were to win two tournaments. My squire is a brand new Landed baron and I swore to be his first champion. I did that. My other was to win the winter Crown. Unfortunately being on the injured reserve list, I can't do that. This year my only big fighting resolution is to get b...

Re: Helm padding question
The minimum is 1/2 inch of closed cell foam, or equivalent. As I visualize what you are intending, half circles of foam plus a padded coif should be enough to pass.
Will it protect you from concussion? I think so, but I can't guarantee it. I'd probably risk it.

Re: Drills to improve relexes and balance
It's a simple exercise that really does aid hand-eye coordination, improve hand speed and lead to a net reduction in reaction time. Another example of why one should not confuse "simple" with "easy." :D For balance, I would suggest yoga and/or unarmed martial arts. I note that there appears to be a...

I live in Ansteorra. I have about an inch of room all the way around and over. I am neither knight or squire, nor do I have asperations of either, but I have heard a saying that I think fits well: "A man who becomes a squire to become a knight, never will. A man who becomes a squire to be knightly, will". Just my two cents. I like the sentiment! I became a squire because I wa...
