Re: Helmet "mask"
A tooled and formed leather mask is something you could do and affix over your helmet's existing grill. Lightweight veg tan would work best for this. Acrylic paint could be used to good effect on the finished product..

Re: Inexpensive Forearm, Elbows and Shoulders
Vambraces can be made with most any rigid material serving as splints riveted to a leather cover. This can then be tied or riveted to a "floating" elbow cop. Shoulder/upper arm protection in the form of spaulders are a great beginner project. Elbows and spaulders can be made easily enough from 16 ga...

Re: In search of a piece of armor
Pain and how each of us experiences it is relative. If Duke Hammersmasher short sticks you good in the thigh, dangling leather might as well be made of lace and good will. If you are just starting out then low profile(hardened leather for example) thigh protection is a damn good idea. Just my 2 cents.

Re: In search of a piece of armor
Historically that area might have been covered with pteruges made of cloth or leather. You could hide some more SCA appropriate equipment under them? http://www.romainteractive.com/immagini/arco_di_costantino/loricae/01.jpg Note the long toga(?) and knee length trouser like garment. Re: Helmet advice please.
Like Konstantine said, a solid back plate in 14 gauge to replace the articulations would be ideal. The other thing that worrys me is that your nose seems very close to the face plate. A solid thrust to the face would not be fun if it forces a piece of metal into your sniffer. Is there anyone close t...

That is a very informative site. I'm currently putting my first SCA Roman helmet together. It won't be reenactment grade but the rosettes are giving me fits. I may end up buying them so this is very informative. Sorry for the thread jack.

Nice helmet. I'm currently working on my first Roman helmet. I too use an inner shield welder and have had great results using Pam cooking spray instead of commercial anti spatter spray. Works good for MIG too. GLWS!

Is it still $850 for the non stealthy finger gauntlets? I have a vendel helmet that I will be selling at our Winter Coronet but that's months away. I might bite the bullet and get a pair of the non stealthys. Borking a hand would really suck.

Quality chainmaille need not be expensive. Jestyr here on the Archives sells awesome aventails for not a lot of $. Great to do business with, too. A mild steel 9mm alternating riveted/solid ring oiled finish aventail is only $125 before shipping. Just wanted to mention an option. http://www.customch...

That is gorgeous. Otto can make very pretty pieces even though he's known for his starter helmets. Don't get me wrong, his basic spangens are nice however a helmet like this is anything but basic.

I've yet to make such a helm. Perhaps someday. Windrose may have what you want or can accommodate your time frame? Aesyr also has the semi custom line of helmets and both are near you. I'm only your area once a year or I'd offer to make this helmet for you. Good luck!
