The right punch
So I'm going to be making more helmets in mild and stainless, mostly 14 gauge. Is a Roper Whitney no. 5 enough for this task? I will be punching 3/16" holes for the most part. Also, who is the best to buy punches and dies from? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Re: Custom Plasma Cutting Services for the Armourer's Commun
Viking and Rus occulars/nasals and cheek pieces in 14 gauge mild would be awesome. It's a pain to cut out occulars with limited tools and tight radius cuts in some cheek pieces like the Vendel 14 I'm currently working on. Spangen tops in 14 gauge would probably sell for those who want to make their ...

Heatgun to form the plates and shoulder cops. I've found that cold water as a sort of quench will set the piece in it's new shape quickly.

Re: up coming starter helm run
Accdntprone's stuff gets even more badder ass every time I check out this forum. I'd buy one were I not trying to corner the local helmet market. Accdnt, do you rock aught else aside from helmets? P.S. One of his earlier helmets is still going strong up here despite our best efforts. Buy with confid...

It looks like Dave's work before he left to start Aesyr Metalwyrks. It's worth the asking price in good shape but the required TLC might scare off buyers. I know its OBO, out of curiosity why haven't you repaired the popped and loose rivets?

I just used a 40 grit flap wheel in my angle grinder. Took my time with it and ended up with a nice, uniform dish.

Re: In need of Norman helmet pattern
I've done two helmets with a leather strip and one using verveilles and wire. The leather strip is a battle proven method. The vervielle/wire method is currently an unknown to me with regard to durability as that helmet went to a beginner who hasn't used it yet. Just my 2 cents.

Re: In need of Norman helmet pattern
If you use slats you can go as light as 14 gauge provided you give them some shape. Invest in a set of Clecos for 3/16ths holes. You can use appropriately sized nuts and screws but they will wear out fast and the Clecos are much faster. Halberds is the spangen master, maybe he'll pipe in.

Re: Looking for starter helmet
Inexpensive is a relative term. Accdntprone or Hjalmr can't be beat for solid starter helmets. I sold a Rus helmet to a beginner for a LOT more than what either of those fine Gentlemen charge for their excellent helmets. Do you have a budget in mind?
P.S. Otto rocks an awesome starter helmet as well!

I just used my 16oz ball pien hammer and a super small depression in my birch stump for the 18 gauge stainless versions I made. My second one turned out better naturally. Perhaps starting the dishing or raising deeper into the lame if that makes sense?

I will be putting a simple Norman SS conical together soon but it would probably be priced out of range. Having said, that if a conical top can be found Performancechainmaille sells mild steel aventails for $125 plus shipping IIRC.

What is his budget, roughly? What size would he need? Is there anyone local who might be able to help assemble a helm out of parts? If not, Hjalmr here on the Archive or possibly Accdntprone would be able to help.

Re: Hidden Armor Advice for a Norse Persona?
I currently wear my Windrose Armoury COP over a Zoombang shirt with a linengarb tunic over both. Hides well though I'm SCA size small at 6'3" 230lbs. I believe Pitbull here on the forum sells patterns for COPs, arm and leg armor.
