Stainless? Mild? If mild just gun blue it, let it rust a teeny bit then rub some oil in with some steel wool. Job done. Stainless can be trickier. Some have had good luck with Caswell stainless blackening.

+1/\ The aventail I just got from Jestyr looks the business and though its mild it appears very well constructed for its very competitive price. I got the 9mm alternating. I agree that making your own is more for the satisfaction of it.

What size helmet are you looking for? Someone might have what you're looking for ready to go. That being said Hjalmr or Accdntprone are hard to beat.

I taught myself to weave butted 4 into 1 chain mail in my late teens. I buy chain mail now because I simply do not have the time to make it for even relatively small projects like aventails/cammails(sp?). I have respect for anyone who makes it.
