Re: Risk of damaging temper when blackening 4130?

I used a gun bluing kit I bought from the local Sportsman's Warehouse on a mild helmet I put together for a local Knight. It went smoothly and looks good. A bonus is that its applied cold. You could wax after or apply some gun oil to keep rust at bay.

Re: How acceptable are unplanished/minorly planished items

One day I will get a planishing stake and hammer. From my humble experience people want smooth on their "nice" helmets and Pas armour. At least locally the rough cops I've made for a few fighters have survived well enough despite being made from 16 gauge mild. The ambiguous "it depends" fits here. D...

Re: Reauesting instructions From knowledgable persons.

Make templates out of cardboard. Refine the pattern(s) then transfer to leather and metal. Splinted defenses are usually forgiving in fitment. You could pretty much crib patterns from pictures of said armour.

Re: Dishing, how do you do it?

I use Halberd's dishing hammer and doughnut. I don't make a lot of armor, just some mild cops and such here and there. I can bang out a cop out of 16 gauge in about 45 minutes though I do need to get a planishing stake eventually if I want to start making them pretty. The dishing hammer itself is us...

The only helm I've made with an occular was a pain. I went through a lot of cardboard and swearing to get I right. I had to make the grill for it from scratch. Yours is already looking spiff!

Are you looking for a specific style? What are your measurements-brow circumference, top of head to top of shoulders? Re: Looking for Local Plastic-Based Armourers in Bedunfirth

For relatively small pieces like gorgets and demis(both of which I offer with optional thin gauge stainless reinforcement s) I find dunking still works just fine. I'm fully aware of the other methods you mentioned and plan on experimenting with them on larger pieces like vambraces and greaves. Gotta...

Re: Looking for Local Plastic-Based Armourers in Bedunfirth

I make lightweight gorgets and demis in wax hardened leather. Light, sturdy, and some have even remarked that such pieces are even pretty enough to wear in the open. If you don't find what you need locally I'd be happy to help a northern cousin. If memory serves Alchemy Armoury is up and running aga...

Re: Gauntlet kit - 18 and 16g mild and stainless steel ready

In an afternoon I managed to assemble most of the left gauntlet using my stump, a 16oz ball pien hammer, a 55lb anvil-shaped object, and a file. Since I had Halberds dishing hammer I used it to form the finger tip lame though I don't think it would be needed. I have yet to assemble the thumb since I...

kaiwolf, keep checking the classifieds as well. You could find a deal on a helmet that fits your head and the persona your are looking to emulate. Its a longshot given your budget, but it can happen.
