Re: How much do you charge for labor?

After some quick math and thinking that I have been charging for my time I was shocked. I've been basically making minimum wage. The volume of stuff I'm making is increasing so that will change eventually but for the time being I enjoy making stuff. Bespoke items with lots of pretty will always cost...

Re: Heavy Fighting: Questions From a Confused Outsider

I worded that wrong. I meant to say take the field for the first time looking sharp. Most kits are built over time. Those are some very impressive kits, indeed.

Re: Heavy Fighting: Questions From a Confused Outsider

I think the salient point of SCA heavy combat has been missed by the O.P. It is a sporterized version of armored combat. I started out in SCA heavy rapier and now participate in both armored and rapier combat. I once helped a Don make an introduction video for grappling as a historical study. Grappl...

Helmet for heavy rapier conversion

My search fu is weak. I am looking for a helmet to convert for SCA heavy rapier and possibly cut and thrust. It would need to be big enough for a 23-24 inch head with minimal padding-I think it's still only 1/4" closed cell foam or equivalent? I have perf plate and can cut and weld if need be. Any h...

Re: How would you set up shop?

Come this fall I may have room for a small workbench. It'd have to be modular and multi purpose though since space is limited. Even I don't go all Sevastian and bend metal on the steps when it's 20 below.

Master Lewelyn, I may be hitting you up for a form. I'm using a breastplate form followed by a fairly deep one for helm halves. I really think I need an "in between" dish. Sorry for the thread hijack.

Basic measurements would be browline circumference. Long or short neck. Distance of pupil to chin. Ear to ear width and nose to back of head.

Re: After pickling mild steel

White wine vinegar for a couple hours in the sun and some love with a scrubby. The hot roll scale just wiped off. Some hot water in the sink then paper towel dryed followed immediately by the cold blue. Interior got primer followed by flat black.

After pickling mild steel

I am pickling a mild helmet top to remove scale. I plan on applying gun blue immediately. How should I rinse the metal after it's pickled to prevent flash rust? Water and immediately dry?
