If it's just for SCA the cheapest option would be butted although it won't hold up as well as the riveted/ solid combo. Let me check on getting some more aluminum. If you could, try to get some sizes on your friends hands. I have my wife and two teens here for hand models if your friend aproximates one of them. Hand length from tip to palm, wrist diameter length of thumb distance, acrosss 4 fingers.

The most important tool is a good eye. Without it you won't be able to figure out how to form the metal right to get what you want. All the expensive tools in the world won't help if you don't have the "eye". This isn't machine shop, this is metal sculpture.
