Never had a problem with splitting. How thick was your veneer? BTW, some companies that make curved-ply furniture (you know, that "modern" stuff), manufacture already curved plywood suitable for cutting into shields with no further work - at least they do here in Oz - I'm sure it would be available ...

I would cut the shield to shape after the layers have been glued together. Better control of the shape that way, less chance of stuffing up. If you're after Norman, 1066 type kite shields, have a look here .They'll also show you the sort of size a kite shield was. Your'e basically looking at something about 2 feet wide by maybe 3'6" to 4 feet long. The Tapestry also shows several strapping methods, if you look at the backs of the shields...
