[quote="Swete" Very nice work. The speed with which you are putting it together is inspiring. I would like to ask about the above picture though. The clear substance around the stitching holes: is that a reenforcing glue or merely moisture being released from the hole punching? I am a complete newbi...

Re: Hardening leather: the finer points (not remaking the wh
from what i've been told, is that metal transfers heat differently when in direct contact, this can cause scorching of the leather. I've also been told that a layer or two of newpaper mitigates this effect so you could still use the steel ones as forms. I'm sure if i am incorrect someone will speak ...

Re: Hardening leather: the finer points (not remaking the wh
I would think that the slight flexibility provides a level of protection in and of itself. Absorbs a bit of the blow itself. The leather i prodeced knocked like wood and would flex on only one axis but always returned to the same shape. Also it would allow a bit of flex when strapping the armor down...

After some experimentation i must ask, will the end result of Bake hardened leather have any flexibility left to it or will it be stiff as wood?

My first armor kit. Very step by step with photos
Ok, so i'm embarking on my first project to build armor. This will be my armor for sca heavy armor purposes. My goal is to build a kit of armor that has historic basis as well as being in complete compliance with SCA requirements. I will be building Shovel Greaves Bazubands Lamellar cavalry torso us...

Konstantine,
Thanks for the tip, I'm not going for a perfect recreation unfortunately. But I am formatting my posts so that anyone could recreate these pieces from a cold start.
Daggrim,
I can still see the photo fine, i'm not sure about the issue.

Sorry for the confusion. I am looking for alternate padding material to put inside my rigid elbow and knee protection. Right now I am using basic knee and elbow pads.

What is "equivalent" material?
Ok SCA types, I see everywhere talks of "equivalent" material for padding to replace closed cell foam. Can someone please let me know what some of these materials are? Is extra thickness of leather, or perhaps a certain thickness of cotton batting? Just more question. Always more questions...

Re: shield boss material, Leather?
This argument also goes for leather basket hilts. If I was going to make a leather shield boss, I would take extra care to harden it, and I would check it for hardness periodically. It also wouldn;t be too hard to add a second layer of reinforcement to the inside or outside if it's a big deal. In f...

Bronze-age leather shield from Ireland http://www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=24741 That's Fascinating, it is a validation of hardened leather for its protective purpose. Several points though, this is bronze age and a bit before my time. It is Water hardened and wax sealed which ties in wit...

Re: Planning: Armored cut 'n' thrust deed at Pennsic 2012
What I can find in this time states that byzantine were likely still doing their thing with lamellar and chain and everyone else had moved on to padded armor over CoP and descendant styles. there did not seem to be much use of arms and legs in western europe other than gauntlets. Also if this is bei...

Re: Hardening leather: the finer points (not remaking the wh
Daggrim, Thank you for the answers. It has been mentioned several times that the dye doesn't like to take on the hardened armor, and that a single coat can cause something like a wood grain pattern. For the edification of others i will test several pieces of hardened leather with one/two/three coats...

Count Johnathan, I do not disagree with you at all. I think perhaps i don't have the vocabulary yet to use the right words. I would say that the danger of fatigue comes from poor control and aim. When fresh an unblocked blow goes where you tell it to. When tired a shot to the thigh may become a shot...

Re: shield boss material, Leather?
Ogedei, No there is not an extant example that i can find. The reason i'm looking at it is that I will probably have enough material left over from making my leather kit that i could make one or two shield bosses from the leather. That aside a friend of mine wants to try doing a leather shield cover...

Hi, Heavy rapier. What is this "Heavy Rapier" A heavy rapier is what they called real sword so that early fencer would let us play with them. Seriously though I'm not using the most up to date politically correct terms. Heavy Rapier= Unarmored steel combat Heavy Fighting = Armored rattan ...

Can you do 14th c.? It's ideal for this kind of thing. I could, by adding splints to arms and legs. I would need to do a bit more research but it shouldn't be too hard. My current kit is 13th century varangian. Lamellar with mail underneath, bazubands (for elbow coverage) shovel greeves (for knee c...

Hi, Here's the words of the new fighter who has been playing in the SCA for a while. I'm just starting heavy fighting, been doing heavy rapier for two years. The quote i've heard most often is "We want to kill our friends not hurt them; I want to kill them again tomorrow" My philosophy, Wh...

Very very interested. However i'm just now putting together my first set of armor, It is easily documentable to mid 13th century (thanks osprey books) and i'm currently trying to take on that extra 50 years. I hope it will serve double duty. Will exceptions be made for design based on armor covering...

Ok, if i may sum up what i've read to see if i have understood. Wax hardening (not period) 1. wet form leather and let dry. 2. melt wax/s of choice to just above their melting point. (155 for bees, and paraffin, 185 for carnauba, 170 for 1:5 ratio carnauba/beeswax) 3. immerse in wax till bubbles sto...

Daggrim, Thank you for the advice, you give me an idea. As i was wondering about the hardening of the leather on it's ability to form. Cariadoc's essay on water hardening says that the leather loses it's stretch and hardens within a few minutes after removing from he water. This makes sense if it is...

@Brenainn, Does the forming hold well even after saturating in the wax, or does it lose form? @Talmoor, I'm aware of the softening and melting in the sun, that why the specific mix of carnauba and beeswax, the melting point is about 170 F and it only begins softening around 155 F.
