Been their done that.

I did a run of 5 spangen kits last year. The kits varied from shaped sanded, drilled and completely bolted to rough hammered panels and only bands shaped and bolted.

Wanna see a pic?

Cool, very dark indeed. "Looks bad and evil".
The mark of good fantasy is to cast an impression on the viewer. One that conveys the message the artist is saying. This piece does that very well.

Thanks for the pic link Wil.

Yes that helm was a custom commission for a client. One can not say no to a bad ass biker with a big wad of money. I do enjoy doing a face in steel, although it's a bit of a challenge. Tell you what. I will work on one in 14ga. mild steel. A full skull face with lower jaw. I will post it's progress ...

I enjoy the footwear threads. Some day I would like to try to make some for myself.

My question is would these tools I picked up at the antique store, help in the making of period shoes?

WaaaghBoss: I am flattered that you would want a piece of my work. I am not a commercial armourer. Just your home hobby metal pounder. I think a smooth not sharp with rounded corners chisel clamped in the vice is what they use. Hammer the outside of the metal on it and the hammer will push the metal down. Work it along the edge a little at a time. Try it out on a piece of scrap.

SteelSnoMan:

That wire lookes like twisted wire. You twist two pieces up with your electric drill, like when making wire to wrap on the sword handle. Then roll it on the rod just like regular wire.

What would be cool is to use different color wires. ie: Gold and Silver.

Thanks Kronos. That was a face for a helm. My tin/lead anvils were made out of some bulk 63% tin 37% lead alloy that I melted and cast into a dome shape. They were designed as a rivet anvil to protect the dome rivet head. I ended up using mine for other things like the skull face. They would be fine...

Hi Gunther: Welcome to the wonderfull world of spangen helms. Here you will find hours of joy or fustration. One must make the bands first in my experience. Then dish and trim the panels to fit each quardrant. Mark them "Left front" and so on. They are asymmetrical. The bands must be bolted together...

It's cut with tin. It does not flake off like a solid block of lead will. It does not rub off on things like lead will.

Man this sounds like a commercial doesn't it?

This was one of my classifieds flops.

Look around for a piece of scrap metal. They show up all over the place. ie: a lug wrench in the trunk of your car can be used as a fluting stake. An old tire rim can be used to hammer a edge over. Lots of free stuff around. go dumpester diving in the industrial area of your town. Check out behind t...

Kettel helms sure are nice. A 20ga mild with a 2 piece top shouldn't be too hard.
Be sure to roll the brim.

Get your pattern cut out in the big shop.
Draw it out on sheet metal or bring your cardboard patterns to the shop.

Grind down a hammer to be more rounded on it's face.

Slam dunk the steel with the dishing hammer in a clump of grass in the back yard.

Happy metal pounding.
