Welcome newbie.
A lead brick with the knuckles shape hammered into in it would be a nice thing hu? McMaster-Carr has lead bricks. And no I do not work for them.

Guill The hot rod enthusiast will masking tape his glass on the car. Then transfer the pattern to the masking tape. He will cut it out with a x-atco(sp) knife. Then glass bead blast with the high air pressure. This gives a crisp detail of the cut out. I do not know about use on armour but on the str...

My bad. Thank you gentlemen. Attention newbies with only a few tools. Yes you can make a costume helm too. 1. Get some left over roofing copper. Dumpster diving at construction sites. 2. Get some 18ga. shear drops at the sheet metal shop. Cut out shapes with snips. 3. Cut a 2" dia hole in a thick ru...

I must say Chazz, You make some very nice helmets. Bravo. Look out WMA......... As a novice hobbyist I can offer no criticism. If I had to say anything it would be the blend between the bronze and the band on the Saxon. As a welder observer and helper May I suggest a more full and blended grill weld...

Welcome to the mad mad world of armouring. You are going to have fun. I recommend a pair of "Bull Dog" snips, also called shears. I got mine from the Snap-On truck. Thet are about 18" long and very heavy duty. They will do 16ga mild steel. 18ga is a snap. I have put them in my vice and pushed the on...

A dumb idea.
What if metal pounders showed a pic of their scrap pile and half finished attempts at hammered steel.
We could have a swap-meet on the net. Or is that what the classified are for?
I told you it was a dumb idea.

Hurts doesn't it. My new spangen helm will have to be a display helm, now that the maile drape is added. It is way too heavy to wear. A fine exquisite line exist between historical and practical and therein lays the artistic beauty I have come to appreciate on this archive. Happy metal pounding, Hal

Gentlemen, Let me say this about the construction. I like it! PROS: 1. It is simpler than the double row rivet style. 2. Fewer rivets to pound. 3. Panels are pulled up nice and tidy. 4. It shapes over the mushroom better. 5. Better dishing on the bands. No ripple around the rivets. 6. Panels will no...

Your welcome. These links were given to me on this forum. I think the archive works like this: One must pass along information to the next one that asks. So now if any one asks about this, your duty is to pass along the links. I bought a buckle and belt tip from StudBuckle. Viking Leather just told ...

I drug it out and dusted it off. I do not have a pic of it on the putter. My first pics were pol*iod scanned in on the scanner. I will shoot a pic of it outside this weekend. next to my most new. Or I wont. This is an embarrassing helm. But this is all day-ja-voo to you. Except for the copper/steel ...

No, Mr.Mad. You advised the lad. It looks like he has gathered up the tools but has not experimented with them. My first attempt was with two thick rubber mats. One with a 2" hole in it and a ball peen hammer. I sat on the cold concrete and hammered out a helm none of you have ever seen. Copper with...

Is that pic the one from the movie? Or is that a pic of one copied after the movie. To build one of those you will first need an antique radio. Buhahahahahahh.......... I would not touch it for less than $1500.00 USD. But then again, what I know about helm making you could put it in your eye and not...
