Burn the end of a log with BBQ brickets. About 1 or 2 hrs. Make a little pile then make about a 8" circle with the hot coals.

Put it out with the garden hose. Hammer it into a better bowl shape with your rounded dishing hammer.

Happy armouring.

You know Wolf, I thought they were dorkie too. I am pretty new to this and did not want to say anything bad. The pot can not call the kettle black. I would like to make a very nice helm that fits the period. I also want it to have some style. Some pizazz if that is ok. I ordered some 1/4" steel dome...

Man what a poilsh. That sure is a cool style of helm. I am not into the grills but I like the helm. Good looking. Nice hammer work. Be proud.

Hal, one who has never made anything like that, but now you are making my hammer hard.

Latest progress:

Is it ok to have different colors in the helm? Like blue bands and shinny panels or visy versi? (sp)
Is this historical? Is their a pic of old?

Thank you for your support.

Yes the TV show was Conquest on the history channel. I could see all sides because they were sword fighting and turning around. I thought they were very pointed more so than my attempt at this helm. They also had nice chain mail shirts and tunics on. All and all I enjoyed the program. It is nice to ...

I can not give the weight until it is finished. The rivets may be 3/16" shank domed head. [img]http://www.cox-internet.com/halberd...

When your machines do not produce the polish and smoothness you desire. Get a bucket of water and sit down and wet hand sand it. Start with 380 or 400 automotive type wet or dry emery cloth. Now you can work out the scratches with finer and finer grits. After it looks great go to a new buffing wheel...

Ohhhh I like that. We had one of thoes in black when I was a kid. Nice to stand in front of it. The crackling sound and warmth.

Funny thing people stand in front of it when it is cold. Eaven in the summer.

Do they do that in Canada? Or do just rednecks in the south do that?

Thats about it. Drill them with the same size drill as the hole. When they start to spin hammer them out with a small drift punch, over a hole in a piece of metal. The heads will pop off.

Hope that helps a little. I hate to remove rivets it is a pain in the ass.

Mad Mat. How to get warm armouring in the cold.

This may sound crazy but here goes anyway. Last night I had a deadline and had to work in the cold. 20 degrees F. Now that is cold for Texas. My barn is not heated. You will have to weld the coupling inside the pipe caps anyway. It is best to use the socket weld fittings all over. Much stronger than screwed fittings.
