Mrks I would like to see some pics of your finishing set up. Sanding is dirty and time intensive. Seems like it takes me weeks to sand a helm. I would be intrested in a better way too.

Thanks for the tips.

Wow that sounds very nice Olaf. So it would be ok to bring a brisket and some polish weeiners? A few loafs of french bread and lots of beer and ice? Do you have a BB-Q cooker and fuel? Or should we bring an expanded metal grill a shovel and briquets? I can help with the cooking and clean up. Do you ...

80grit, 120grit, 320grit, 400 grit.
Each sanding is in the opposite direction.

Be sure to remove all the last sanding scratches with the next finer.

The 400 and 600 can be done by hand wet.

Happy sanding,

Hal.

The big black book by Mr. Price says to hammer the steel over to where you need it. I do that and trim off the bottom to fit. Sand the edges so their is only 1/64" gap and weld. This operation was very hard for me to grasp in the beginning. Dish and dish some more. Pull the metal over to where you n...

Their is no way to make it any faster. I spent all day today sanding a spangen helm. I did get to drill and punch a few more holes. This is what it looks like now. It has taken me 4 weeks just to get this far. Armouring is not a fast thing. It takes time and care. If You need something fast, get a r...

I was unable to attend last year but I think it was a how to with tools and everything.

Ask Mad Matt he came all the way from Canada to attend.

I think they had a very nice time. Camped out and all that you know.

Oh that sounds like you need a spangen kit.
Pre dished and formed bands. You do the final finishing clalmping and drilling. A chance in a lifetime to build your own Spangen Helm. Only one left in stock. 14ga.
Pics available on request.
Ask Taltosh if they are any good.

For 14ga. helms I like the 1/4" long 3/16" shank dia. 3/8" head domed rivets.
I do not have to cut them off. But I need the 3/8" long for triple thickness.

I guess it is all a matter of prefaces.

Sasha:

I always enjoy your advice.
Could one go the cheap way out and use RR spikes instead? If you cut them a little long would not the extra peening cover the square peg in the round hole effect?

For your first armouring needs, do not worry about it. Get some 18ga. 16ga. and some 14.ga. in what ever you can get. Go to the scrap yards ask around. Smaller pieces can be used. Be on the look out for strips that can be used for spangens. Check out your local sheet metal shops. The guys are correc...

I do not like sanding anyway. But I guess it is a necessary evil.

The Captain is correct. This process is far beyond the home shop. This takes a very large industrical complex.

On the outher hand your drawing looks a lot like a oxy. tank bottom that Archive member Taltosh might fix you up with.

I think that piece alone can make or break a helm.

Looks good. You may truss up the cross member. Reinforce the anvil support and make the anvil adjustible in height.

Move the center of the crank pin out a little and I think you got it.

Jolly well done Guill.

Make a plywood full scale model to refine your design.

One does not make weld caps. One contacts the local industrial welding and pipe supply and buys them. Not to pricy I might add for what you can make out of them.

This is a weld cap a 6". I make mushrooms to hammer on. Works great for the spangen panels planishing.

Mr. Krags Texas Armour-in?

Hello,
Is the armour-in still on for this spring?
If so I would like to make plans to attend.

Also Is their an air compressor available?
I would like to bring my new pneumatic dishing and planishing machine to get some feed back from real armours.

Thank you,
